Homeschool – How to Give Your Kids a Proper Education

As a homeschooling parent, I want to give my children the best education I can. But what is good education?

Good is a subjective word, so I can tell you what I think a good education means. I think in terms of results.

What do I want my children to be educated about?

I want my children to love learning. I want my children to develop the satisfaction of becoming “experts” on topics that interest them. I want my children to wake up wondering what they will learn that day. I want my child to research or ask me for help spelling a word as he writes a story. I want my daughter to ask me how to solve an algebra problem because she is studying bacteria. They should be able to read magazines and understand them. They should be able to separate the chaff from the wheat when doing almost anything. My children need to understand how their society and country works and know what is happening in the world. My children must be able to adapt to new technologies and changing social, political and physical climates. I want my children to be good contributing members of society.

What kind of education will achieve this?

I am convinced that worksheets, school bells and hours spent at school are not ways to instill a love of learning in children.

Play is important for learning. The so-called book Einstein never used flash cards Talks about how playtime makes young children happy, and children “catch up” to their peers by second grade, even if they haven’t had ballet lessons, swim lessons, piano lessons, and a rigid preschool curriculum.

In the January 20, 2009 issue of Science, the so-called The report calls for a fresh look at what’s happening outside of school Reports on how important it is to learn science in informal settings and that we learn science in different settings. Schools are burdened with teaching demands and the love of learning may not survive the school bureaucracy.

Article in February/March 2009 The Scientific American Mind called A serious need to play notes that “free, imaginative play is critical to normal social, emotional, and cognitive development. It makes us better adjusted, smarter, and less stressed.”

I have read many other books and articles on how to foster a love of learning in children and have developed my own homeschooling program for my children based on this.

minimal

Children have a minimum amount of “work” required to complete each task. They need piano practice every day, but I’m fine with them only practicing for five minutes. They should read it every day. I don’t keep track of my daughter’s reading because she reads all the time. My son is not a bookworm yet, so I sit down with him and read to him for fifteen minutes every day. My son has to write a sentence every day and my daughter has to write a paragraph every day. They also need some kind of physical activity every day. Both kids have to do some math every day, even if it’s playing Monopoly with Dad or keeping score in a Scrabble game.

Other than the bare minimum, I have some goals in mind for them. My daughter has to give me at least one book report a month. My son has some goals for learning to type.

All these activities are their responsibility. If they do their minimum, they can play, or whatever.

documentary films

If my kids want to watch a documentary from the History Channel, NOVA, or the Discovery Channel, I let them. I watch shows with the kids to answer their questions, but if my 7-year-old wants to watch a documentary on string theory, he can watch it. The kids get amazing information and understand more than I expected.

library

We go to the library a lot. If the kids want to play with plastic jungle animals, I let them. If they want to see how long a ladybug lives, I let them.

outings

If the kids ask to go to the science museum, I plan and take them. My husband and I take them to performances that are appropriate. Basically, if the kids show an ongoing interest in the subject, if it’s reasonably within our ability, we’ll try to help them get what they need to understand it.

Me and my husband

My wife and I love to learn and we show it to our children. They see that we read regularly. They see that we get excited when we learn something new. My kids see us become obsessed when we try something new.

works?

So far, he has. My children love to learn.
