"Low Millions" Adam Cohen Dishes on His Ex Girlfriends and What Wets His Appetite!
Adam Cohen is the frontman of the band Low Millions (current radio hit “Sculpture” and recent debut CD EX-GIRLFRIENDS) and is backed by a group of some very talented musicians! Guitarist Michael Chaves has recently worked alongside John Mayer, but has an impressive list of credentials after that. Bassist Jørgen Carlsson and drummer Erik Eldenius grew up in Sweden and performed with other famous artists. But whoever they played with obviously delivered a quality of music and performance that would leave any audience a little breathless and wanting more ‘millions’!
Adam Cohen is every bit the performer and true to his musical genes (son of the legendary Leonard Cohen), his stage presence is more striking than his father’s, but his commentary during concerts always shows his natural quick wit and charm! The chemistry he has with his bandmates is good at best, but he seems to have more of a connection with guitarist Michael Chavez, partly due to their shared musical influences (Prince, U2, Roxy Music and The Police) – no doubt. And on stage they are electric! Most of today’s bands take the stage with a bang and do their own thing, with some interaction with the singer, but Adam and his team remain “poetry in motion”. If they are in your city and want a seductive and charming evening, then buy a ticket. (You can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket!) This band doesn’t cost millions to see, so get a ticket!
Low Millions and Orlena
(Theron on Yonge, Low Millions with Adam Cohen and Michael Chavez.)
Adam Cohen and Michael Chaves are not ruled out for this interview. Their knowledge of each other extends over the past few years; Their bond, however, is one of brotherly love and admiration for each other’s musical artillery.
Hospitably, Adam asks if there’s anything I’d like to drink and asks his EMI music team to get me something, but I’m desperate for something to drink and want to get down to ‘business’ with them. It’s hard at times though – they’re very charming and smart when it comes to talking to women, which I’m not surprised about because Adam tells me it was hard for him to whittle EX-GIRLFRIENDS (an album he rather informally dedicated to some of his favorite girls on his list) to just 11 songs.
It’s about 2:50pm and Adam and Michael have been all over Toronto doing press interviews, TV appearances and radio interviews, which explains the choice of location since it’s right across from the CHUM radio studios. They performed a live acoustic version of their song “Eleanor” for the entire city of Toronto to hear.
Here are some of my favorite bits from our interview:
OC: Adam, you’ve been called a modern day Sade…if he was French…could you move like him? Maybe I’ll give you a sample at the show tonight.
Adam: I can probably give it a convincing shot. are you coming
OC: Of course!
Adam: If I call you tonight, will you come up and dance?
OC: Of course I will… I think I have some steps. I think I’m going to have to fight a few women to get on stage tonight.
Adam: Don’t hang around with me. If I call you, you better be there!
We all share a laugh and then get back to business…though the idea of dancing with him is tempting…focus! Focus!
OC: Your latest CD is Ex-Girlfriends is it about your ex-girlfriends who I heard you didn’t change their names to protect the innocent or the guilty?
Adam: Yeah, that’s right, the songs came from experiences that I had. I may have written all the songs (except Mockingbird, Here She Comes and Low Millions), but I see the songs as mannequins, and these smart musicians in the band are the style, the tone, and the dressing of the songs. The only problem I wrote about all of them was that the ones I didn’t write about called me, why didn’t I write about them or invite them to a photo shoot? But, with the ones I’ve written about, just by the looks of it, you can see why anyone would be so excited to write a song about them!
More laughter fills the room from me and Michael…
OC: There’s a song on the album called Diary where you read one of the ladies’ diaries and you learn some interesting things… is that right?
Adam: Yeah, he knows exactly who he is, but I’d be reading my own magazine at the time. I had a hard time finding good literature and this is what I read.
OC: Looking for new ex-boyfriends?
OC: Michael, you’re quite fond of Canadian artists (worked with Sarah Mac Lachlan – Adam Cohen).
Adam: Yeah, baby!
Michael: (laughs) I really admire Daniel Lanois, but I’ve also liked bands like RUSH in the past. What musician hasn’t tried to play Tom Sawyer? But I also want to work with Avril Lavigne.
Adam: Yeah…I want to work with him! I would love to work with Avril Lavigne.
OC: Other artists you like?
Adam: Beyoncé! I love Beyoncé…I think she’s a gem in the rubble of R&B artists. She’s the real deal…love her…she’s a queen! But I don’t have anything for him to be interested in I’m sure… nothing for him… (more laughter from Adam… he’s full of it!)
OC: Adam, have you had interesting moments with so many women, any famous moments?
Adam: I once crossed paths with Grace Jones at Heathrow Airport; He sat next to me on the plane and when we got off he asked me if he could borrow a hundred francs for the taxi ride. When I told him I didn’t have any, he insisted I go to the cash register and get some for him. He was very, very firm with me. Let me tell you, there is nothing sexy about fighting over taxi fares. So after standing over my shoulder as I withdrew insufficient funds from my account, we parted ways.
OC: You express many tastes in some of your songs. In the song “HEY JANE” you say you want to go out at night and taste it. What flavor would it be?
Adam: Honeysuckle and juniper.
Michael: Chocolate. Any and all chocolate melts and can be grated. But if you ask me tonight, it might be something different…..like Petrone (a rare tequila) – it’s a condor favorite!
OC: Condor? Is it some kind of nickname?
Now the laughs are really starting to flow between Adam and Michael and I can only imagine the fun these two can have!
Adam: Wait…no…Honeysukle and Lichee. I love lychee…. I have a big appetite………mmmmmmmmmmmm!
OC: I bet!
