Pop Music

What is “pop music?” Where did this difference come from and what is its purpose? If it has a purpose, who does it serve?

On closer inspection, you can see that this is the way society absorbs the thing; A tiger’s spoiling. This is another useful illusion from the Society’s Illusion Tools. Throughout my school years I had to put up with this fight between “serious music” and “pop music”. Of course, I bought a little at first. But it only takes questioning the status quo.

First of all, we all know what this business of “pop music” and “serious music” means. Of course, a lot depends on which side of the fence you sit on. If you are a “serious musician”, “serious music” is “good” and “pop” music is “bad”. Of course, we all know that “serious music” doesn’t make you money. why Because it’s “good”, of course, and most people don’t know about “good”. They only pay for music that is “bad”.

Now to be fair, if you’re on the other side of this particular fence, ‘serious music’ is ‘boring’, (that’s bad) and pop music is ‘cool’. (It’s good’). Moreover, it tends to be ‘radical’ and ‘revolutionary’, historically speaking.

“Serious music?” part of the establishment.

It’s important to think about the political demographics that underlie these differences in music. They’re pretty obvious when you stop to think about it, but it’s interesting that most people talk about these differences without thinking about them. From these two simple music categories, you could easily categorize listeners by politics, religion, average income, etc., etc. People make up this demographic. Not the audience, but the people who are in the business of sales and marketing.

However, as you might suspect, all of these demographics are held together and protected by belief systems spun on half-truths, exaggerations, and straight-up fantasy.

Even “serious” musicians were allowed to indulge in ludicrous myths and caricatured profiles of past composers, greatly damaging their tradition. Most of these people, who should know better, are happy with the historical spins that have been given.

This kind of thinking drained the vitality out of tradition. Just take the idea that composers like Beethoven and Mozart weren’t really popular before they died. This notion has given rise to a mentality which says that whatever it creates is very good for today’s audience, and it must continue to create for some, undefined, better future audience. It also conveniently insulates him from any criticism of what is going on.

In fact, Beethoven was recognized as the greatest living composer during his lifetime. The city of Vienna, historically a vital center of European culture, paid a man to live there. As far as “radical” or “revolutionary”, well, let’s see; We have Beethoven dedicating his third symphony to the leader of the French Revolution. We have Hector Berlioz creating an enduring masterpiece while stoned on opium.

We’ve had premieres of famous classics like Bolero and Rite of Spring that were either banned or caused chaos. This list goes on and on.

And what about this dirty chestnut who says pop music is less of a discipline? Anyone with an ear for music can tell you that there was a lot of great “pop music”. And why not? Many of these artists, like Elton John, went to music school. They are “serious musicians”. So why is this a big scam? The most obvious suspect is the music business, but it’s already clear that they have no idea what they’re doing.

No, the deeper reality is that as long as culture has existed in the Western Hemisphere, there has been a counterculture. This whole counterculture business that supposedly started in the sixties didn’t.

How far back does it go? well Richard Wagner in his early days was part of the free love movement in Germany and his first opera was called “Forbidden Love” and it has nothing to do with power rings or Teutonic nymphs.

This is an opera that Wagner, later in his life, admitted he wanted to forget, and we’re just not going to let him. I will touch on culture and its twin, counter-culture, in the next articles.
