Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler’s Fascination with Elvis Presley

In a 1979 interview in the magazine “Guitar Player”, Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler summarized Joel A. Siegel’s self-taught guitar style. “I chose the basics from people like Shadows, the Everly Brothers, Duane Eddy, Rick Nelson and Elvis …. I’m playing American music.” Elvis Presley influenced many young musicians entering the 1960s, even those across the Atlantic in England, and the work of King of Rock and Roll and individuals continued to attract Knopfler into the 21st century.

Knopfler’s first brush with the king came when Phil Lynott (of fame Thin Lizzy) wrote a song about Elvis’ death for his 1980 solo album “Solo in Soho”. The song “King’s Call” has the same guitar playing features that appeared on the first two Dire Straits albums. Knopfler was featured in the music video for the song, wearing sneakers and crying from the famous red Fender Strat. He. In a 2001 interview for Vintage Guitar magazine, Willie G. Moseley called the song “Elvis’ best song ever recorded,” to which Knopfler replied, “I really enjoyed hanging out with Phil. . [His death] Is a shame; He is a sweet man. ” Even as recently as 2006, the Austin Chronicle (an alternative Texas newspaper) was praising “Iota licking” heard on the track.

In 1991, Dire Straits’ last album “On Every Street” opened with the song “Calling Elvis”. The song was also used to open each concert during the 91-92 special tour. Many references to song titles such as flow through lyrics such as:

Oh love me softly

Baby, do not be cruel

Return to sender

Treat me like a fool

Ironically, the song was not inspired by Presley, but was actually a strange word from a family member. During a BBC 1 interview, Knopfler explained, “My brother-in-law said one day that trying to call your sister is like trying to call Elvis. That’s all.”

In 2004, Knopfler went on to play tribute with a quiet song called “Back to Tupelo”. Perhaps more about Elvis’s famous manager, Colonel Tom Parker, it tells Elvis’s story at a crossroads. In a broadcast interview that year, Knopfler explained, “I think I gradually learned as a child that Elvis wanted to be a Hollywood star as well as a singer. I did not know exactly how bad it was. It woke me up. Surprised to know that there is a music manager today who admires his manager, Colonel Parker, and thousands of kids today want to be famous, often just want to be famous, maybe more than ever in the past.

There may be more references and songs in the store as the year progresses. Elvis may have left the building, but he certainly did not leave Mark Knopfler’s creative ideas.
