Dividing Your Practice Time

“Oh, there are so many things I want to practice a little time to do it.” We all get like this sometimes. Here are my tips for getting the most out of your workout. No matter how much you practice, divide it into three parts.

The first part is “heating up”. Warm up with some technical work. This is a good time to make sure your arms and hands are stretched out properly. Run on a familiar scale. Play with the meter. Metronome time alone can take hours if you are thorough and focused on becoming a stronger musician. Play along with some of your favorite rhythm patterns as well. Use different rhythm patterns while playing scale, chords, arpeggios, triad inversion, and anything else you can think of.

The next section is “Growth”. Growth usually involves work, not music. Things like learning new scales and chords would fit this category. Going through new ideas, learning new rhythms or whatever, these are all things that fit the growth side. Now that you are stronger with your practice habits, I am sure you can see how using the metronome you can go through the first two parts. As you progress into the second part, increase the challenge level and play unfamiliar scales or patterns. Increase the rhythm or try to increase your subsection. For example, if you are playing the eighth note at 80 bpm, work on three times or sixteen at the same rhythm.

The last section is the “fun / congested” section. That’s when you just have fun and play your favorite song or put it on a Jam-Along CD and cry over it. You can also turn it into a “creative” section. This is where you will find ideas for songwriting, creating music or working on your improvisational skills. Make music!

Now we are all at different levels and we all have different goals. So feel free to be a little flexible with this plan. Let’s say you have an hour to train. You can divide that time into three parts, 20 minutes, or two parts, 15 minutes, and the third part is 30 minutes. Maybe you really want to sharpen your rhythm or your pentatonic scale for an upcoming game, audition, or rehearsal. You can make your “growth” section a little longer and narrow the other parts.

Also, make sure your goals are clear to you so you know how to tailor the section to best suit your needs. Enjoy it!
