Do You Want to Be a Musician or Do You Just Want to Learn to Play Songs?

Every time I meet a student for the first time, I ask them some questions:

  1. Why do you want to learn to play the guitar?

  2. What kind of music do you like?

  3. Who is your favorite artist / band?

  4. Do you want to be a musician or do you just want to learn to play music?

The last question always makes them wonder. The general answer to that question is “Is there a difference?”

The answer is, “Yes, it is very different … to me.”

If students just want to learn to play the song, I find their favorite song, work it out with tips, and then teach them the chords and everything else they need to play the song as they listen. . This method is very productive in that they learn to play their favorite songs and in creating a repertoire very quickly. Some of my students learn 30 to 50 songs a year.

I find that students who like this method want fast results and do not care about not knowing any music theory. Their goal is just to play songs and have fun. I also enjoy teaching them. One of the reasons I like this approach is that I do not have to go into the details of extreme music theory.

For those who want to be serious musicians, my approach is different, we slowly recreate the music, but they learn every detail of the music, such as reading theories, scales, chords, arpeggios, improvisation and so on.

This method is very relevant and teaches students how to think like a musician, how to listen like a musician and how to act like a musician. At the end of these courses, students can walk into any exam and pass the exam with flying colors, they will be able to pick up any song, read and play it.

Becoming a musician is beyond the ability to grasp a guitar and chords. It is about knowing how chords work in conjunction with scale, it is about knowing how to use chord scales and arpeggios to improvise and create new melodies and harmony. It talks about what a chord is, just listen to it.

I really like this method. When I teach my students, I also learn a lot every time I go on material.

So in my opinion, there is a big difference between just learning to play a song and becoming a musician. One is no better than the other. The end goal is different. Which will you choose?
