Love African Drumming? Here Are Two Tools to Help You Find Your People

If you love African drumming, you probably know you are not alone. That said, sometimes it is hard to find new people to learn to play with, and generally around – the community is an important part of drumming and it is good that we have some tools for developing them.

Here are two basic tools to get you started:

1) Facebook group – If you are on Facebook (and everyone today) there are many groups that are especially relevant and cater to people who like to play the drums – from groups organized around the drum circle to lessons to gather people who Love. Of African music, you should be able to find something that suits you. Plus, it’s all online so you can connect with people anywhere in the world.

If you have never joined a Facebook group before, all you have to do is: Log in to Facebook, type ‘djembe’ or something similar in the search box and see what happens (Tip: groups will be marked As a ‘public group’ which means that anyone can join or ‘closed group’. To join a closed group you must make a request and then be granted access by any group administrator).

Some good teams to start with: Djembe DrumAnd Video lesson Conga and Djembe Drum.

2) Meetup.com – If you are looking for people to play with, drum circles to join, or just want to hear and around some drums in Real worldMeetup.com is the first place to check.

This site is a collection of ‘Meetups’ organized by people in the real world based on location and events.

To check it out, go to meetup.com, type in your location and the distance you want to travel, then type ‘African drumming’, ‘drum circle’ or ‘djembe’ into the search box and you’ve got a list. Events are held nearby that you can attend.

Even if you can not find any suitable drum group near you, try to expand your search phrase. Plus, you can just spend some time browsing through Meetup.com and see what other groups have in case you are interested in other than drumming …

If you find something nearby that you enjoy, create a Meetup account and join the group! Joining a Meetup is usually free, although some will charge a small fee to cover the cost of managing a Meetup or the event.

Both tools are pretty basic, but hopefully they have helped you find some people to connect with.

While learning to play the drums on your own is good, it is important to try to play and connect with others. Every time you can.

Good luck!
