The Basic Parts of a Sheet Music Stand

Music booths come in many types and styles and can be made from many different materials. But with a few exceptions, they all share the same basic parts. From bottom to top, these include “base”, “shape” and “disk”.

Basics

The base of the stand is mostly three-legged and has three legs or standard fixed base design. The three-port base connects the top of the foot to the side that rises from the floor, with the three bottom contact points on the ground. These types of legs can almost always bend or collapse. Almost all foldable and portable music cabinets are designed this way. A standard base stand will often have three contact points on the ground as well, but the other end of the foot is usually welded steel to the bottom of the axle. This will give the stand more stability, but will sacrifice the ability of the stand to easily fold down into a smaller space for greater convenience. Most locations found in schools are of this type.

The Shaft

The central part of the music stand that connects the base to the disc is the axis. If the stand height is adjustable, it is likely that the axis will have two tubes, one inside the other. These tubes will magnify and then lock at the desired height. If the stand has a standard base, it is highly likely that the axis will have a “one-piece” design. That is, the outer tube will be a single piece and will not fall shorter than the minimum playing height. If the stand has a stand, it may have one, two or three chopsticks (or more). The multi-piece shape will telescope down to the smallest size for ease of transport or the pieces will be separated and thus take up much less room on either side. The number one chopstick is usually considered the strongest, however, the foldable and portable music player has become more robust in recent years.

Tray

The part of the music box that actually holds the music is commonly called the tray or “table”. The disk consists of two main parts. The vertical backs are called “book panels” and are usually single solid pieces or are constructed of several interlocking bars spaced between them (similar to a folding shelf). The horizontal support (which keeps the music sheet from falling to the floor) is called the “shelf” or “lip”. The average depth of the shelf is about 2 inches, but it can vary depending on the use of the stand. For example, if a musician intends to read music from a book, a stand with a deeper shelf will be needed. Shelves usually come in a single piece, attached or in two pieces, folded together in the middle. The entire tray (bookshelf plus shelf) may or may not be adjustable for different tilt angles and sizes and strengths.

Sheet music stand differences

These are the basic parts of most music stages that you will encounter. Most exceptions will appeal to the artistic design and come from the stand, which is very nice, but sometimes it is not easy to move. Some examples include solid-footed music venues (without legs), oval stands, and jazz or “big band” legs. And because there are so many styles of sheet music, understanding the basic work of one of the most important instruments that a musician will use is useful for two reasons. Increasing your general musical knowledge is always important. And knowing these specific words will allow you to compare different positions for your own music needs.
