Surviving My Life As a Military Wife

In 2007, I married the love of my life! He was charming, funny, a great listener and the best friend I would ever have in my life. We still get to know each other, even after ten years of marriage. It is not always easy, but we do it effectively. When we got married that fall, I did not know what I was signing. I married my husband, but his mistress is in the military. My husband has served this great country for 31 years … He loves serving his country and he loves his army.

Needless to say, his passion led him to deploy many times throughout our married life. Now the deployment is easier for me, but I have to admit that the previous separation was like a long canal for me a year ago. It was during these deployments that I realized I needed to make a plan if I was going to survive as a military couple. I have to learn that dreaming of serving him will bring him out of our wonderful wedding moment! I used to be very miserable during our holidays, birthdays or anniversaries because I had to rely on him.

During my husband’s first 18 months deployment to Iraq in the first year of our marriage, I had to get something that really brought me joy. Even though my husband is the apple of my eye, I must know that I need more in my life than waiting for the phone to ring. I have to cultivate my own plan if I am going to live as a military wife.

The first thing I decided to do was think of something that really supported my passion! I was so busy obsessed with what, when and how much more I heard from my husband that I began to feel Loss of self-identity. I have fallen into mild depression and sometimes yes I even wonder if marrying a professional soldier is the best option for me. Breathe big!

So one of the first things I did was find a way to serve others. I went to the nurse in our district and guess what !? They are looking for volunteers! I decided that the best way to get through the time until he got home was to do what he did … serve. I helped transport the residents to the day room. On Saturday morning, I sang for them to read the scriptures. They play music from their time, and most importantly, I listened to their stories about their lives as children. . I learned a lot and made long-term friendships with them. Even their family members know me and I feel like I myself am making a difference by raising a generation that now needs support.

The next thing I did was create my bucket list, not that I thought I would expire, but I wanted to make a list of everything I wanted to do. Each item on my list requires time to decide, and with my husband far away, I have time to work on each of them. While my husband was away, I wrote a book on my photography skills, started a business, and became a radio host, actor, and motivational speaker. I have also become a local voice for women in need of relief after sexual, verbal, or emotional abuse. . In addition, I briefly served as the husband of my husband’s FRG (Family Readiness Group) for his unit. After all, I know I can love my husband with all my heart, but find purpose in my life apart from him.

I finally got in touch with another military couple in the same boat. Some came from my husband’s unit and some I met through communication with other military personnel. I think the main role I have to play for my husband is “military wife”, what I have learned is that for any relationship to survive The lives of each participant must grow and mature. I need to grow. I need to push out of my comfort zone and go beyond my comfort zone to find satisfaction in what motivates me. That was my “ah” time. I do not have to live with my husband anymore. I trained myself during many of his deployments. I have grown mentally to be more self-sufficient and know that in finding myself holding on But better yet, I was able to contact my spouse to a whole new level. Our marriage was better for the decision I made when he was deployed. Now he really admires me for deciding to keep myself occupied and productive. He no longer worries about me because he knows I can take care of myself. My husband often tells me that he is proud of me for re-branding myself and for making up for the time we spend so often.

I will not change the life I have now for anything! The military career my husband pursued was a blessing in disguise for me. I can despise the military and my husband because of the huge time commitment it takes. However, now we both see it as an adventure because it gives us a series of opportunities to grow together, even though we are miles apart.
