Worldwide Appeal of JRock and KPop: Proof of Universality of Music?

As of this writing, the Asian team is hitting the world table. Korean pop bands and Japanese rock bands are entering the market and culture that was once dominated by Western music.

Videos of KPop girl groups (that’s Korean pop for the uninitiated) like Wonder Girls have been viewed by millions on YouTube. Their single “Nobody” is an international song. Meanwhile, pioneers of JRock (e.g. Japan rock) and visual kei – XJapan – have been touring the United States with tour dates in various US cities.

Undoubtedly, Asian music has gained tremendous popularity on a global scale. And their fans from countries other than Japan and Korea are growing. But KPop and JRock are still objects of curiosity.

Although their music is rooted in contemporary Western forms such as rap, hip hop and R&B (rhythms and blues) for KPop and Punk, rock and metal for JRock, most of their lyrics are in their own national language. . It means that non-Korean and non-Japanese fans do not understand the message! It’s like the universal motto of today’s youth: “Do not care about the message, just dig the music!” They do not understand the meaning of the song. However, they drive to listen to them at the concert. And even download them legally and are paying for it. Surprisingly, “modern kids” even look and dress like their stars. The Japanese subculture of cosplay (replaying costumes for the uninitiated; where fans dress up as their favorite cartoon / animated characters) is also a global phenomenon.

So the question is whether these two trends are evidence of the so-called universality of music? Music as a universal language?

My friends will ask for a difference. He says both are examples of “cultural imperialism” in which cultures from economically influential countries directly and indirectly influence the culture of a more backward nation. In fact, he considers KPop and JRock to be influenced by Western music on Japanese and Korean culture.

I do not agree. Although I recognize the “pressure” – directly and indirectly – of economic questions (such as Western monopoly on production, distribution, and advertising in the global music industry) on cultural issues between nations. His focus only on the issue of “music form”.

I believe that if we follow his logic, only pure and true music (and general culture) will become the “ethnic music” (or ethnic culture) of different nations. I think such an idea is “narrow religion.”

Music and culture are constantly evolving as long as people from different backgrounds get involved and interact with each other. National culture is disappearing, multinational and global, facilitated by the development of the Internet and other means of modern technology. Indeed, there is only one race, the human race.

However, US domination in the relations of nations can not be denied. The influence of Western music on Asian music was the result of America’s global economic victory after World War II.

But the more important question for me is not the “form” of the music, but its message or its “substance”. Debate in the form of music should be considered just a humorous endeavor. In a nutshell, my sister and I created a website that made JRock fans anti-KPop addicts, but only for self-expression jokes. But that’s another story. So more important than average (music format) is the message.

Sadly, art (and music in particular) is in a for-profit industry. It is in business, not to promote artistic freedom and expression, but to make money from talented (sometimes non-talented) people.

But there are “a handful of chosen ones” who can come from different – even opposite – musical forms but are given the opportunity to express themselves truly, even if such expressions are not profitable. To interpret guitarist and industry veteran Eric Clapton, he says in his autobiography that the percentage in the music industry remains the same: say the percentage remains the same: 95% rubbish and 5% net. And who are we to disagree? “Clapton is God” said the cartoon in the late 1960s London. And God can not be wrong, right? (Smiles)

So back to the question, is JRock and KPop’s universal appeal a demonstration of the universality of music? Yes, but only in part. Because when they use different tricks, such as getting Korean women to wear shorts to sell songs, that is when the music takes the back seat and the “profit” takes the steering wheel. But still fun to watch, right? Get lost! (Smiles) #
