From STEM To STEAM – Adding Art To Your Educational Mix

We often use phrases; “It is an art and a science” when describing the complex tasks that we humans do. Maybe we use that phrase because it describes it best, and if so, then maybe art and science are closer in the efforts of more people than we would like to accept. Is it the learner’s fault for separating the two tracks and defining them as separate tracks and genres?

One of the things I found in running a Think Tank is that people who are good at math often have a taste for music and can play music well. Many people who are good at physics can also have and even be a favorite artist. Psychologists know and understand how strong reasoning is needed to take 3D objects and represent them on a 2D canvas, and these researchers also know that sound, temperature, time, and even music reading do. By the same pattern as Advanced Math.

I recently read an interesting post on creative thinking titled; “STEAM Lesson Ideas for K-12” posted on September 22, 2017 by Michelle Korenfeld who said, “STEAM education is about adding art to STEM. What you get is curiosity. The more the better the attitude and the better the ranking. Here are some ideas: Start with a zebra and lion painting or a poem and focus on the tricks of vision and three-dimensional vision. “Far away, those stripes blur the vision of the prey.”

Well said and I have to say I really agree. Now, if we look at Fractal Design, it is about mathematics, so is Golden Ratios. Stephen Wolfram has a great book worth reading called “A New Type of Science” and looking at the design in it will instantly connect math with art. In addition, when we look at nature and consider biometrics, we have many opportunities there. For industry, robotics, structure, aerospace, sea, space, engineering. It’s all “ONE” and art and science go together – they always have!

Are we missing the boat without educating the youth with art, music, sculpture and dance? Do we blind them to finding other models or understanding these models when working with advanced mathematics and physics, biology and chemistry, and engineering and design? It seems to me that we have, and I find this observation very sad and a little controversial. Isn’t it time for us to create games for STEM and STEAM subjects towards the future of education? Think about it.
