A Review of the Yamaha Young Musicians Program

Students who attend this program can choose to learn Electone piano or guitar as their main instrument. Study materials offer study through six successive levels. Study at all levels focuses on the core principles of “listening-singing-playing”. The main emphasis is on being able to play instruments so that students can play music.

Students develop listening skills by listening to CDs, listening to others, playing instruments in the classroom, and listening to their teachers play music on primary instruments. Singing is done in solfege by students learning to sing do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do for various pitches. Songs are also learned using words and are often accompanied by instruments from the teacher or others in the class. Playing is accomplished by re-learning techniques, instruments and melodies.

There is a social development aspect to Yamaha’s study that encourages the fun of making music with others. This fun often continues after class. Children who like to be with others seem to learn well in this nurturing environment.

The Yamaha course book is visually appealing with lots of colorful pictures. Students like to learn to read music at the same time they sing and play it. Enhancing musical skills while encouraging an appreciation of music goes hand in hand with this approach.

The belief that music can have a lifetime value is one of the best things about Yamaha Young Musicians. The program tends to be very successful with many students. Some students choose to start a course and then switch to a private lesson after completing a year or two. Many private teachers perceive student transfers as having different security skills.

Parents of children who wish to learn the three basic instruments of the program can perceive it as a solid foundation for any future music education. The time spent creating group music as a child gives students the ability to perform well in school orchestras and choirs when they reach elementary, middle or high school level. This is probably one of its strongest points.
