Playstation Portable Firmware and PSP Home Brew

PlayStation Portable is the jack of all trades. It plays music, videos, browses the internet and plays games. However, for the growing population, this is still not enough. With a powerful dual processor configuration and Memory Stick Pro Duo PSP slot, it is a pocket power that is more capable than gaming and multimedia.

This is where the homebrew community comes in. With some modifications to its system software, the PSP can run third-party applications just like a normal computer. A large community has emerged online dedicated to these modifications.

When Sony first released the PSP, there were no restrictions. It is possible to write third party programs and install them into memory. The PS2dev community developed a homebrew development tool for the new system, and the developer community began to grow.

After a while, Sony began to realize that this was a problem. Although third-party utilities and games are harmless, they know that it is possible to run commercial games from memory as well, using homebrew’s ISO storage device. Sony knew this could affect their game sales, so they released firmware version 2.0, which removes this feature. In this version of the firmware and all subsequent releases, it is not possible to run anything other than UMD disks and official game tests from Sony. While it makes plagiarism impossible, it has also had a devastating effect on the growing homebrew community.

In late 2005, Homebrew developer Fanjita discovered a gruesome hole in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. By copying a specially hacked game, saving it on a memory stick and loading it in GTA, it is possible to intentionally crash the PSP and load custom code! For the first time since firmware release 2.00, it is possible to run homebrew code again. At the time, PSPs with 1.50 firmware were in high demand and supply was declining. Using this software exploit, Fanjita and the Noobz team were able to create a “downgrader” for the current firmware version 3.40. It is possible to downgrade any PSP as long as it is nothing higher than 3.40 to the old firmware 1.50 and thus use it for homebrew again.

Sony is not too happy about this exploit. They released the collection back on GTA: LCS and sent the revised new copy to the store. They have also started releasing firmware updates on their own game discs. Newer games require newer firmware, so homebrew users have to choose between a full-featured PSP or a disabled system compatible with newer games. As always, the scene finds a solution, especially a program called Devhook, but it is confusing and complicated to set up.

Custom firmware

Custom firmware replaces the official firmware of your PSPs, but it is not a permanent update. You can easily uninstall custom firmware and go back to the official firmware if you do not like or do not want to use custom firmware anymore.

The custom firmware has all the features of the official Sony firmware but also adds the ability to load homebrew PSP ISOs and PSX EBOOTs directly from the game menu in XMB. So you can still play your original UMD music and video discs using custom firmware.

Custom firmware also has the option to use ‘No-UMD Mode’ so you can run your PSP ISOs without having to enter UMD. The ‘Sony NP9660’ No-UMD mode has the highest compatibility rating and almost all ISO games work with it.

If you have PSP ISOs in ‘DAX’ format, you need to convert them to ISO or CSO files using UMDGEN. Custom firmware does not support DAX formats.

PSPs Your UMD Drive should be empty while installing / downgrading your PSP. (Except when downgrading from 3.03 and 3.50, you will need to install UMD to start the upgrade program.) It is recommended to remove the UMD Disc from your PSP before you do anything in this guide.

If you do not have a USB cable but do have a memory card reader, you can use one instead. When you see ‘Connect your PSP to your computer and USB connection’, turn off your PSP, remove the memory stick from your PSP and insert it into your memory card reader. When you see ‘Disable USB connection and disconnect your PSP from your computer’, remove the memory stick from your computer, insert it into your PSP, and turn on your PSP.

The hacker, known as Dark Alex, came up with an attractive solution. He designed a software package that, when installed on a PSP running firmware 1.50, allowed users to install hybrid firmware of his own design. On the other hand, PSP with Dark Alex custom firmware has all the features and functions of standard Sony firmware in addition to support for firmware based on 1.50 firmware. The firmware also comes with a so-called “HEN” short for Homebrew ENabler. Developers can create applications for the familiar 1.50 firmware or the later 3.XX series this way.

Dark Alex continued to improve his own firmware and managed to keep track of all the major releases from Sony. His latest stable firmware, M33 3.80, is still the most advanced version yet. It has many new features, including custom devkit, support for the 1.50 kernel plugin, and most importantly, a hacked network update system. Previously, the network update process would upgrade to the Sony vanilla firmware, removing the home brewing feature. However, in the M33 3.80 it is due to be able to update to the new custom firmware using Sony custom devices.

So what are the features of this custom firmware? This new custom firmware has all the features that Official Firmware 4.01 has added. Many people are asking me if it is worth installing it and my answer is yes. I have a custom firmware 4.01 M33-2 already installed on my phat PSP and I have not encountered any issues yet. But do not take my word for it. Try it for yourself. You can always go back to your old 3.90 M33-3 if you want.

Too much for oppression. Here are instructions on how to install the new custom firmware on your PSP.

Requirements

As always, check that you have gone through all the requirements before you can do the installation.

* Fat PSP or Slim PSP is already installed with custom firmware. At least 3.52 M33-4 custom firmware must be installed on your Fat PSP and 3.60 M33 for slim.

* Fully charged battery. I know it will run on 70% battery, but 100% battery with AC adapter plug is the safest installation.

* USB cable for transferring files from your computer to your PSP.

* Installation package 4.01 M33-2 that I created for easy installation. Download the 4.01 M33-2 installation package and unzip it on your computer.

Steps

The steps are divided into 3. Follow the instructions carefully. I will not be responsible for any bricks. Do it at your own risk! But I am 100% sure that you will not make your precious PSP if you follow the instructions carefully.

Step A – Installing Custom Firmware 4.01 M33

1. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable. Open the Step A folder and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0: / PSP / GAME /. After copying, disconnect the PSP from your computer.

2. On the XMB menu on your computer, go to GAME> Memory Stick and run the 4.01 M33 update. When you run the update, the screen turns black. Follow the instructions in the text. This will take you to the Official Sony Update screen. That is normal. Continue the process as instructed.

3. Sony Updater will work. Do not turn off your PSP or interrupt the update. After the update, you will be asked to press a specific button to restart your PSP. Do that.

4. Congratulations your PSP is installed with custom firmware 4.01 M33 now. Go to Step B.

Step B – Installing Update 4.01 M33

1. You can only do this if you succeed with step A. Connect your PSP to your computer. On your memory, go to PSP / GAME and delete the UPDATE folder.

2. Now open the Step 2 folder to your computer and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0: / PSP / GAME /. Disconnect your PSP from the computer when you are ready.

3. On the XMB menu, scroll to GAME> Memory Stick and run the 4.01 M33-2 update. Just follow the on-screen instructions and you will be safe.

4. After installation, you will be returned to the XMB screen.

5. Congratulations on your 4.01 M33-2 PSP.

Step C – Kernel Extension Installation Guide 1.50

1. This last step is optional. You can do this or not. The next step will be instructions on how to install the 1.50 Kernel Add on for Fat PSP. Sorry slim owner.

2. Connect your PSP to your computer. Open the Step C folder and then copy the 150.PBP file from your computer to the root directory of your memory. And then copy the 4XX directory from your computer to ms0: / PSP /.

3. Exit USB mode and on your XMB go to GAME> Memory Stick and then launch the 1.50 Kernel Add-on. Follow the on-screen instructions.

4. After the installation is successful, you will need to revert to XMB.

5. Congratulations. Now your PSP is the same as mine as a full combat handset. Place your 1.50 home brews on the PSP / GAME150 directory.
