The Cons of Toastmasters

Do you remember the first time you had a big dispute with your mother? Not that small clash about your curfew. I’m upset, but I’m fine.

I am talking about your first major battle. Where your blood boils. One that you have declared your puberty. Someone removed her from your list of Christmas cards!

Yes, that one.

I am sure that image is vivid and clear in your mind. Do you remember all the emotions you experienced? If it’s like me, then you’re confused, upset, angry, and 100% sure you are right.

That’s how I feel when I sit to the right of this article. I felt like I was arguing with my parents. Toastmasters is an organization that created my interest in public speaking. Toastmasters nurtured me as a speaker and leader.

In theory, Toastmasters is amazing. In practice, Toastmasters fail a good number of people. Continue reading to get my acceptance on the CONS of the great organization known as Toastmasters.

Good human society.

Your average Toastmaster is a good and meaningful person. They smile from ear to ear on command, they give feedback, improve encouragement, and they will do everything they can to make you feel at home. This personality is generally good for organizations like Toastmasters.

The desire to be friends often negates the need to give good feedback. Attending the Toastmasters meeting gave me the opportunity to have a great public speaking experience. I encountered a small number of high quality presentations. These are met with intense scrutiny.

I also listened to a lot of scary speeches. These are also met with intense scrutiny.

I see eyebrows raised and now I explain myself. I think it’s good that Toastmasters encourage each other. It’s amazing that we want to keep people positive. It can even be noble to shelter people from the painful reality of their weakness.

There is only one problem with it. When you give a bad performance in the real world, you know right away. People give their hard-earned federal reserves to Toastmasters. There should be an obligation to provide a valuable speech evaluation, not the most popular speech evaluation.

Lose cheese

You have to be incredibly mature to stomach Toastmasters. Meetings can be a boundary line. Sometimes I have to check and make sure I am not at the National Clappers Association meeting. Every meeting has a small part like this:

Toastmaster: “All our guests will get up and talk a little bit about themselves. You are in a green jacket, we will start with you.”

Green Shirt Guest: “Hello, my name is Chris and I heard about your team in the newspaper. I decided to come down and check it out!”

Toastmaster: “Let’s applaud Chris!”

* Stand hug *

Toastmaster: “You were there in a purple shirt. I’ve seen you here before. Stand up and tell us about yourself. You “

Purple shirt guest: “Hello, my name is Samantha and I want to join for a while. I have been here many times and I finally decided to give up. Today is my first day as a member!”

* Stand hug *

Toastmaster: “Now I will have someone to stand and say what they will do today.”

Table Topics Master: “I am the head of the table topics and my job is to provide topics for speaking.”

* Stand hug *

Grammar / Ah Counter: “I am a Grammar / Ah Counter and my job is to make sure no one types English”

* Stand hug *

Scheduler: “I am the scheduler and my job is to make sure we are on time with each talk!”

* Stand hug *

Toastmaster: “Other announcements”

Member: “My cat has changed from wet food to dry food!”

* Stand hug *

Toastmaster: “It’s great. Let’s start this meeting.”

After all that excitement, the meeting began. Some say it is good and it boosts morale. I say it is exaggerated and it gives the meeting a terrifying feeling of a pro-rehabilitation team. It started to get a little blurry when the rocket was fired because the cat was now eating dry food.

* Stand hug *

No participation standard

Toastmasters can work wonders for energetic personalities. From the first day, I was able to jump first and win. I made sure I attended each meeting. I always volunteer to speak on a table topic or fill a meeting role. As the days, weeks, and months passed, I could testify that I was growing by leaps and bounds as a speaker.

There were other people who joined at the same time as me and they got nothing from it. They never give speeches. They never participated in the table topic. They never had a role. They never do anything. As a result, they get zero benefits from the program.

Most outsiders view Toastmasters as a structured class that will teach them the ins and outs of public speaking. Once they know what Toastmasters are, they always turn around and run away.

Toastmasters is a flexible organization. You speak when you want to. You evaluate when you want. You join the table topic whenever you feel it. Flexibility is good for some things. When you are trying to improve as a speaker, flexibility can lead you down.

In my opinion, every organization fails to leave the same way they came in. The structure has to go from flexible “do what you feel” flexibility to more “do as you must” structure. This way, everyone who picks up the handbook will be rewarded. Most people need structure.

Show up and we will reward you

When you get a college degree, you demonstrate a certain level of skill in a subject. You have taken the quizzes and finals. You have written documents and thesis. You are ranked on your results and rewarded accordingly.

If you are a musician who aspires to gain recognition, you must create high quality music. Once you have created enough material, you can start approaching people and working to sign an agreement. After you have presented yourself and caught the eye of the right people, you are rewarded with cash and a recording contract. .

I can list events and tasks throughout the day that require a certain level of skill before handing out prizes. It is the path of the world.

In Toastmasters you are given a title based on the number of speeches and activities you have participated in … not your abilities.

The levels are as follows:

1 -> Skilled communicator (10 speeches and everyone has the same handbook)

2-> Advanced Communicator Bronze.

3-> Advanced Communicator Silver (10 more speeches. 5 from 2 advanced guides of your choice along with the key points of leadership)

4-> Advanced Communicator Gold (10 more lectures. 5 from the 2 Advanced Handbook of your selection along with the key points of leadership)

5-> Honorary Toastmaster (10 more speeches. 5 from 2 advanced guides of your choice along with the key points of leadership)

Speakers at the advanced level are usually the cream of the crop. I have seen only a few high-level speakers who are poor. I have seen many award-winning communicators who are just as good and fearless speakers as they have ever been.

Toastmasters does not offer quiz or exit exams. You do not have to show the ability to move to the next level. You do not have to do anything but show up and fill the air with words.

For one person, I do not think rewards should be awarded that way. The current Toastmasters model gives people the motivation to show up, give 10 speeches, win a competent communicator award, and then ride out at sunset without improvement.

In all other fields, the registrant demonstrates his abilities and then receives a prize. Toastmasters should follow.

Conclusion

Toastmasters is a great organization. I do not want you to read this article and believe me I think otherwise. If it weren’t for Toastmasters I would not know what I want to do with my life. That does not mean that the organization does not have much room for improvement.

The purpose of the Toastmasters is to create better public speakers. The organization will be closer to this goal if these four steps are followed:

1) Eliminate the “good man society”

2) Lose cheese

3) Establish standards of participation

4) Create a capacity measure

Toastmasters collaborators do not take this article personally. I only say these things because I want Toastmasters to better serve everyone who walks in the doorway.
