10 Basic Tips for First Time Bloggers
No one is born a blogger. We all have an awkward introduction stage where we do not know what to do, what to type or how to get people to know about it. I have been blogging for many years and have been working on web design for a living – and I Still Change things almost every day because I know I’m doing something that doesn’t work.
Here are some of my personal tips for beginner bloggers. Remember that every blogger has their own style and preferences, but there are some important elements that you should focus on so that the traffic you get also returns.
# 1: Do not make your readers wait to read.
This is probably the biggest complaint from visitors – your blog takes too long to load. Statistics show that most internet users will wait 10 seconds for a page to load before closing the page. Make sure you are below this limit and your main content is loaded first. If you have some items on the sidebar that take extra time to load, make sure they do not slow down the rest of your block.
Try to stay away from hi-res backgrounds and headers. Hi-res can add up to 5 seconds or more to your load time. If you have a full-featured website, you can not afford to delay. Look for a background with cute tiles or create a smaller top image that places the tiles at the top of your page and matches your background color. And go with creative headers, but use less than 1/4 of your visual display area.
See the end of this article for two great services to help you manage your load time.
# 2 Do not turn your page into Times Square
It’s very appealing at first to fill your header, footer and sidebar with links and sponsors. You may be thinking, “Yes, but the more ads I get, the more money I make.” Not necessary. If the dozens of ads you post on your homepage are too late to load, leaving your visitors frustrated – then you are not getting a penny. Also consider the reputation factor: You want your blog to be known for its content, not for the billboards you sometimes type.
So how do you get started claiming a daycare business? Take the time to choose a branch that a) appeals to the type of readers you are trying to attract, b) pay more than a few coins per qualified activity c) have attractive advertisements or even the right ads Will the color scheme of your website. The easier they are to match your site, the less likely they are to turn off your readers. Remember: Affiliate links are worthless without prior traffic, so focus on your readers first. Sponsors will come.
# 3 Animated gifs, background music and other “Blog Bling”
Another big misconception is that your blog has to move and make noise to catch the eye. The idea is not lost, but it has been changed.
* Instead of animated gifs, try slide shows, light effects, or photo transitions.
* If you really love background music, try to find something quiet, relaxing and instrumental. And always remember how you set the default volume of your players, because many readers may stop by your blog from the office or while the kids are sleeping nearby.
I know I keep hammering this at home, but it’s the most important thing: look at your storage time. Large header + background image + advertising + bling = maple syrup in December.
# 4 Captcha and Fear of Spam
One of the most annoying (and frustrating) things that happens when you first start your blog is the rapid collection of spam comments. It happens to everyone. It annoys everyone. And everyone slaps one on their comment form.
This is the best way to go – but only for the first time. Over time, I have discovered that spam bots that crawl into the internet and target your blog do not have much patience. Placing a captcha for the first month of your site is usually enough of a block that they will move to another new site. After 20 – 30 days try to remove your captcha and see how it goes. Usually the first period of security did the trick. If you find that you are still receiving spam comments here and there, please set your comments for approval before posting to eliminate fakes.
If your blog allows readers to express themselves quickly without the hassle of captcha or ten security gates, then you will find that you get more and more frequent comments.
Side note on captchas: Not all captchas are created equal. Choose one that is simple (4 – 6 characters) and easy to read. Many times I have written comments on a great blog just blocked by an unreadable captcha at Finally. What will readers do if they get the wrong captcha more than once? Leave.
# 5 Join the hop network, link list, directory and ranking list.
This is exactly what a blogger should do. The most valuable are in joining the group forums and jumping to the next block. However, if you find that you do not have time for blogging and community involvement – get involved anyway. Fill out your profile, link to your blog, organize your profile (if any) and post photos. Then leave it alone. At the very least, you will have links to your website in other areas for Google to select and increase your rankings.
# 6 Find the most popular blogs in your niche.
Examine how they drive traffic, where they place ads, how they design their designs, and what they write about. You should not model your blog after others, but you can learn many techniques and methods that prove effective.
# 7 Research Hot Topics
This is a great place to start for bloggers who understand the trends but are not yet ready to tackle the intricate details of SEO. Use Google Trends to find what people are looking for. Choose the top five variations of your topic ideas and use those phrases throughout your title and post. After you have a clear understanding of the trends, start researching how to best move into a serious SEO strategy.
# 8 Choose a simple blog title and a simpler URL.
“iamamomandiliketowriteaboutmykids.bloghere.com” may be the exact description of your blog, but it is not easy to type into a browser and is more likely to be typed than visited. This is another great way to use Google Trends. Write the phrase that best describes your blog and then find the top search results that will point to your URL.
# 9 Do not expect traffic to increase in less than 90 days.
There are reasons why most sites and ranking listings require your blog to be 90 days old before you can submit to them. Build a solid base of loyal readers (even acquaintances) first – then worry about weird visits. Let your founding members give you feedback, suggestions and ideas to get you ready when new traffic pops up. Your friends are your best test audience.
# 10 Do not be afraid to mix from time to time.
In traffic slowdown? Modifying design profiles or introducing new features weekly / monthly can increase your readership. But do not go overboard. Changing your title or category will work against you – keep it simple with your editing so your site remains familiar to your readers.
