Film Impactful Interviews

My Bread and Butter is a videographer (especially a videographer in Chicago) filming interviews and testimonies. I have recorded hundreds of such interviews, I have worked with other videographers, created interviews, and I have seen many more video interviews online. During this time I learned some important tips to make a good and engaging interview.

The first point must be summarized. When I prepare video interviews, I usually talk about my topic for 30-40 minutes. However, an effective video interview with a subject is 1.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes. When I get a response from my subject that is long and it seems like he is wondering with an idea, I have them finish supplementing them with how good their response is and ask them Summarize it in 2-3 sentences, sometimes it takes a few. So leave 40 minutes for the interview.

Second, make the interview more conversational. There is nothing more boring than reading questions to a topic. As human beings, we are a society. Yes, the subject understands that he is finally talking to an imaginary audience and he is just filming. However, I have seen shy people open to me when I engage with them by conversation. They forget the camera is pointing at them and they give me rich and personal content. Sometimes as a videographer you can not engage in conversation or you do not feel comfortable doing it and prefer to just engage with the device. If this is the case, it’s really worthwhile to bring in another person whose subject can speak (and engage).

Always use at least two cameras. Having multiple angles makes editing easier. You can easily cut interviews and jump from one camera to another during the transition. Cutting interviews taken with a single camera creates an interesting jump cut. In addition, having multiple camera angles makes the video more dynamic. Sometimes I even add a little slider movement to add a more dynamic feel to the stick shot.

The sound quality is very large. In my video production I use an advanced lavalier microphone. The lavalier microphone is closer to the subject and you get more audio signals and less environmental noise. Of course, most viewers who watch these types of videos will not be able to tell the difference between shooting with a $ 30k camera and what shooting with a smartphone. However, the sound of the bed is immediately noticeable. The sound of the bed screaming the video “Volunteers”. If you do not have good lavalier mics, you can use gungun mics. Ideally, you want to get the microphone as close to the subject as you can. You can attach such a microphone to the stand and run the cable to the camera. Sound mixing is also important. To get professional sound quality, you always want to add a little compression to the sound so the loud parts are reduced and some parts are turned. I often use a small EQ to erase the lower end of the sound spectrum. When mixed with some music, the sound is compressed and light EQ will reduce mixing more easily.

Finally, to do a video interview, you need to have something to see to cut. It is often called a B-roll. B-roll filming is a visual scene that supports the story the subject is telling. However, sometimes I use photos from the subject and create visuals that tell the story visually. When I do this type of collage, I really like the photos that are not taken professionally because it better represents the reality of the person being interviewed.

All in all, the video interview was cut to about 2 minutes, requiring a good audio recording and multiple cameras. When done well, they are a powerful marketing tool for any business, product or service.
