How to Keep Players Coming Back in Youth Football

Tips to keep players in youth football

Part of the “mission” when you are coaching youth football is to keep players. While youth football may not be a thing for some kids, for others it just takes a while to grow up on them. At the end of each season, I have kids on my team who may have decided they would not return for another season. But somewhere along the way they change their mind to come back and have a great season that changes their mind about the game forever. While I enjoy watching my team play well, perform our football perfectly and win the championship, I get more and more satisfied with getting my players to finish the season and return to youth football. Another year.

Here are some things I like to do 60 days after the end of the season to help change the minds of those sitting on the fence:

Season DVDs are always very popular. I made one that included funny titles, all our achievements and we set it to Christian music. You do not know how often those DVDs are viewed by your children and their families, some of my parents have said that their children basically “run out” of DVDs from playing them too often. Watching it a lot can help kids play their football better. These DVDs keep new games in the child’s mind and set you apart from other youth soccer teams he can visit. It can also set you apart from other sports, such as football or baseball.

I always send these DVDs to kids in December as Christmas gifts along with a letter. In a letter like this, I wrote how grateful I was for the season, parents and children. I also include personal messages about what Christmas means to me and my family. Dave Dimon, a friend of mine from Florida, has been sending personal letters to his children for some time. He talks about how he appreciates the players who have contributed to the team and talks about the events and characteristics for each player. While it may seem time consuming, Dave reports that these letters are valued by his children, and some even put them on. This is what I will do for each of my players this year and for the near future.

Most young football players need a little public encouragement to get them interested in games that include your star players. You do not know that a child may feel a little inadequate about his efforts. We all have children who are not beginners that we know will develop into good players in the next year or two. Unfortunately, some of these kids do not understand that with years under their belt, they will become “stars” next year. Some of these kids lose interest and give up football altogether without proper motivation. If we believe that youth football teaches life lessons, our goal as coaches should be to keep all children, regardless of their abilities. I want to keep a star, a future star, and never be a star. Some ignorant people think that it is a mutual exclusive agreement, it is not true You can play kid, keep kids and win, even the most competitive in the youth football league. I did it and there are others.

Take the time to do this and your savings will increase. Men like Dave Dimmond are the guys that kids love to play with, and he’s the guy who was cheated at the gas station by his current and former players. He told me that he received an email that often started something like this:

Coach Dimon

My name is John Smith, my friend Mike Jones was talking about your youth football team last year. He brags about how much fun his son Jimmy played for you, as well as how your team went 11-0 last season, scoring all the points with the mistakes that John boasts all the time. How do I get my son to sign up for your team? Do you have any space left?

I also want the kids to take home the team title for a week. We then ask them to bring the trophy to school and give it to a teammate who keeps it for a week and send it to the next player on the list. This keeps your new team name at school and in the minds of young children interesting while giving your players something they can present for their family and friends.

If you are coaching youth football and your team is constantly competing, you will receive an email like that, too, we all do. Encourage your players and be creative with keeping football fresh in their minds and not only will you get better retention numbers but you will also not hurt new players.
