Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music Review

I just finished reading Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music. I was angry with myself for waiting so long to read it. It’s been in the “To Read” pile for a long time and I just read it. It’s a great look at the evolution of music over the last 20 years or so. From the rise of indie bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes to Prince’s record label to mp3 and the “Pay What You Want” model introduced by Radiohead and NineInch Nail’s Trent Reznor.

I can not honestly say that I remember a lot about my seventh grade history. I can not even tell you the name of my teacher, let alone what we “learned” that year . One thing I remember is a banner hanging over a blackboard. It reads, “Those who do not learn history will perish to repeat it.”

If you are going to be a musician today, then you need to understand how the music industry has changed so you can try to figure out where it goes. Surely it is good to know the writers at Tin Pan Alley from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. It is important to understand the role of radio in the emergence of popular music and how payola manages that. It’s important to know that the first video that aired on MTV was “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggle (think about it for a minute).

In the last 20 years, the music industry has changed more than it has almost entirely. Or certainly in this century. The current music industry we operate in is still changing at a rapid pace. There is speculation about the extinction of CDs in 2-3 years, there is a significant recurrence in vinyl (who saw it coming ?!) Important record labels as we know they can cease to exist. In 5 years, mp3 and file sharing is now a good thing and a major source of worldwide distribution (what ?!)

Greg Kott’s “Ripped” is one of the most interesting books on contemporary music history I have ever read. He jumps into the first chapter about the big consolidation, where all of the big 5 (at that time there were 5 big record labels as opposed to 2 1/2 now). This was a big change in the record industry at the time. It scares a lot of artists and puts a lot of people off work.

Greg did a great job of detailing the unification of the big bands, the rise of the indie band, the opposition, and for the role modeling of hip-hop and records and recent artists, lords, records, and methods. It’s itself the rise of mp3s and the collapse of Napster and the “Pay What You Want” model that Radiohead started with “In Rainbows” which Trent Renzor “improved”.

I do not want too much, because I want you to enjoy this book. It. IsA delightful book. It discusses in detail the many things that have happened over the past two decades that have changed the face of the music industry drastically.

You can read each chapter as an explanation of each group or person or aspect of the industry. But when taken as a whole, “Ripped” reads more like a cautious tale with a hopeful ending.

“Those who do not learn history will perish to do it again.”
