Easy Home Theater Setup

Home Theater arrangements are foreign to many users. Many people know how it wants to get in your way with a box full of speakers and cables and know they do not know what to do with all this. Do not be afraid. There are a few simple steps to install a home theater system so that you can enjoy it as much as possible. Properly covered, it will withstand a great deal of adverse conditions. To do this you will need the following:

  • Owner’s Manual to your Recipient.
  • Tape Measure
  • SPL meter ($ 20 at Radio Shack)

The first step is to pull the owner’s manual out of the small plastic bag it comes in. Someone spends a lot of time putting up that booklet. There may be some useful information in it. I agree that it may not be as exciting as the latest murder mystery that hits the bookshelf, but reading it will help you enjoy your movies and music. Read the manual and find the section related to speaker installation. Most recipients will have many different settings to choose from. The first is to set the speaker size.

Loudspeaker size usually relates to the low-pass point from the main speaker to the subwoofer. Some receivers allow you to set the crossover type, and some just have settings for small and large. The most common difference is that the small setting limits the crossover type to 80Hz, and the large setting just eliminates the crossover type, meaning the main speaker will produce all the sound. 80Hz is a typical crossover setting because it is the same crossover point that THX recommends for reproducing the best tunes. Most home theater equipment from electronics stores is designed for the 80Hz crossover. If your speakers hang from the wall or on a bookshelf, they are probably best suited for small settings. If your speakers are stand-alone, they may be able to handle large settings.

The next setting to worry about is speaker distance. Go ahead and decide where your favorite place to sit and then grab your measuring tape. Measure the distance between each speaker and your venue and write it down. Then put that distance into the distance setting for each speaker.

Now you can go ahead and have a seat at your favorite place and unplug your SPL meter. An SPL meter is used to measure the sound pressure level or how loud the speakers are. Turn on your SPL meter and turn the dial to the 70dB signal. Then shift the weight to C and respond slowly. Now go to the speaker level calibration menu. Some receivers give you a choice of external or internal signals. Select Internal. The speaker will then start emitting SHHHHHH, usually starting with the front left speaker. Hold the SPL meter in front of you at ear height and tilt it slightly forward. Adjust the level of each speaker up or down until each speaker reads 75dB on the SPL meter. Be sure to include the speakers in all the fun.

Some receivers have settings for ohms. Ohms have to do with the durability or efficiency of a speaker. If your receiver has this setting, check each speaker and find out what “Nominal Impedance” is. It will be rated in ohms. Ideally, you should be able to find settings that match your speakers. If not, try to at least find a setting with a lower ohms than the speakers.

Now you should be done. You can always mess with equal settings and everything else, but this is where all sound systems start. Now go get your home theater where you spent a little money on crankin ‘. And as always, enjoy the show.
