The Single Piece of Guitar Music That Has Helped Me Improve The Most on the Guitar
Four years ago when I was living in Brooklyn, New York, I started learning guitar with Brazilian guitar teacher Billy Newman.
Billy has a great scene in his arsenal, and our weekly lessons give him plenty of opportunities to bring in incredible pieces of guitar music.
We worked on all kinds of pieces, most of which were not as good as Brazilian guitar music. However, there is one piece that really helped me to make great strides in my play.
I remember that day in mid-December 2007, just like yesterday: there we were in the music room in Billy’s apartment and a piece of music came out. It’s an arpeggio study of some kind, and Billy put it on the music scene as he said, “You’ll love it. This one “.
He then went on to move across the piece to show me the basics of how to approach it.
It is a one-page classical guitar study by Leo Brower. Sixth of his Etudes Simples.
The study immediately caught my eye with its funny and unusual chord sounds. I did not understand the complexity of how the chords worked at the time, but the sensual atmosphere of the piece drew I entered immediately.
Learning one piece at the highest level possible will help you on the guitar more than learning fifty-half pieces. By the time I first met Brower’s Sixth Etude, I was convinced of the idea, but I did not really follow through on it.
Therefore, it is time to see how much a piece of music can help me.
At first I did not know what I was doing. The first stages of moving forward are not unhappy because the chords and arpeggio are beautiful, but I know that I’m far from where I want to be with this piece.
For the next two years, I practiced this section almost daily. That’s not an exaggeration, whenever I sit down to practice, I make sure to spend at least some time working on this study.
The thing is – any given music, if it is worth learning, there will be many things you can spend almost indefinitely to get better.
So here is my advice to you: If you do not have the exact guarantee of getting you where you want to play the guitar, get a copy of Brower’s Etudes Simples Part II. The second set of studies consists of six numbers.
Then do the following:
1. Commit to this piece. Decide that you will work diligently with it for a long time to help you get smoother and faster with your finger movements and your ability to emphasize different parts of the arpeggio full length of the neck. Guitar.
2. Then handle the arpeggio. Pay special attention to when her finger pulls in and you have to kick out at the same time with your middle finger. Also take a close look to make sure your thumb moves effectively across its notes in the arpeggio.
3. Work slowly at first. Spend as much time as you need to get all the pieces of arpeggio working in your chosen hand. Do not rush.
4. Force yourself to decrypt the identity of each chord in the piece. Whenever you play it, make sure you know the chords you are playing and how they relate to each other.
5. Use a meter. This should be a no-brainer for you, but if it is not, believe me: use a meter.
6. After you get a comfortable arpeggio and mix, focusing on the notes of a single string as you move along the chord. Try to keep the notes of one string stronger than the other letters. It will train your fingers to create dynamic emphasis independently of each other. That’s a good thing.
7. Finally, when you get all the parts moving clearly and smoothly, try to be fast. Create relaxation into your fingers as you turn the rhythm per minute. Let the arpeggio melt your hands into a single machine snow of powerful, resting motion.
There is plenty of music you can tackle that will keep your interest for months and years to build you into the guitar player you dream of becoming.
I can accept from personal experience: The sixth episode of Leo Brower is worth dealing with with a complete commitment to ownership.
