DJing Class Reunions Confidently and Effectively

How frustrating is it to DJ your class reunion? These events are probably the most annoying DJ parties because of the egos of the guests trying to look “cool” to their classmates who thought they were “cool in school”. This is an informative article with effective music programming techniques and tips for perfect responses to annoying visitors. By the end of this article, you should be confident and excited about the DJ class meeting.

Party Ego depends a lot on how old people are. Generally, the older the crowd, the tamer the crowd. The younger the crowd, the more badass requests, people telling you how to do your job, what to play, a few insults, and prepare yourself for possibly the longest night of your life!

This article will teach you how to choose the right music, how to format your music program, what to say to a guest request, and what to say to a guest who tells you how to do your job. If you follow this advice, you’ll have tons of fun DJ class sessions. You’re in full control, so learn to stay cool and have fun!

Hour 1: Choose music

What year did they graduate from: Search the Internet for “Best Songs” for your graduation year. If the episode ends in 1994, like “Top Songs of 1994”. Put together some of the best songs “around” that year. EX. 1993 and 1995. For the first hour or so, you want to play this kind of music.

Hour 2: Play some current top 40 rock stuff

Hour 3: Open the dance floor with Current Beat Music (Current Hip Hop and some current Rock Beat music).

Hour 4: Play some slow love songs for the couple to dance to, then re-open the dance floor with some really cool dance music (try different sets and see how the crowd reacts: Old Hip Hop, Motown, Classic Rock Dance Crowd maybe like Spanish Spanish music (if the crowd seems to like it, keep going, if it seems boring, change the set.)

End the evening by asking the host what their class song was. Play That and your night should be a huge success musically.

What do you say when guests ask you to sing? “I’ve already played it” or “I’ll do it later”

What do you say when a guest tells you what music to play? You can politely say, “Thanks for the offer, but let me be the DJ and hang out with your friends and we’ll get to your stuff later” (smile)

When guests really, really want a song and they’re aggressive but not rude, they say things like; “Come on, if you play (This Song), everybody’s gonna dance.” (people rarely do). Say ok. Play their song and let them know that this person (THIS SONG) requested and said everyone will dance. People will then be hesitant to request a song and control the party.

What do you do if a guest disputes a request? With a smile: “Do you want to DJ?” Show them your mixing board and say, “Okay, have fun.” Then leave them behind your counter and walk away, see how quickly they panic.

It’s your party, your music, and you’ll never see these people again, so be confident in your choices and decisions. Always be as polite as possible and never get angry (it shows you are losing control). If people are so angry with you that they pose a threat, turn off your equipment, pack up, and leave. It’s not worth your emotional breakdown and hurt. Stay cool and cool because you’re an amazing DJ!
