Legend of the Fist The Return of Chen Zhen

In 1925, the Japanese occupied Shanghai. They divided the city into several settlements. They are preparing for a massive invasion of China. Not only are the Chinese being bullied by the Japanese, but they are also being oppressed by the Westerners who have come and gotten rich through their business.

Chen Zhen (Donnie Yen), a World War I soldier, reappears as Qi Tianyuan, a businessman in Shanghai. He hangs out at the Casablanca nightclub where a beautiful singer named Kiki, Fan Qing (Shu Qi), works.

Qi Tianyuan’s best friend Liu Yu-Tian (Anthony Wong) is a nightclub owner. Together, they plan to lead a resistance against the Japanese tyrants. An ambitious Japanese military discovers that resistance fighters have planned to assassinate General Zeng (Shun Yue), the son of the commander of the northern Chinese army.

They see an opportunity to create internal conflict among the Chinese people. The Japanese will then blame it on a rival military leader, General Zhuo (Yue Ma). Killing Zeng by the Japanese would cause a civil war between the two rival military leaders and make it easier to conquer China.

The plot fails when Qi Tianyuan disguises himself as a masked superhero dressed in black. Colonel Takeshi Chikaraishi (Ryu Kohata) is the sadistic leader of a Japanese military group in Shanghai. He began killing anti-Japanese people on a list sent to him by higher officials in Tokyo.

Colonel Takeshi also puts two and two together and discovers that Qi Tianyuan is actually the masked hero Cheng Zhen. Elsewhere, Qi Tianyuan/Chen Zheng falls in love with Fang Qing. Soon, Fang discovers that he goes by the name Yumi Yamaguchi, a spy for the Japanese army.

To test Fan/Yamaguchi’s loyalty, Colonel Takeshi Chikaraishi orders him to kill General Zeng’s girlfriend Vivian (Xiang Huo). Enraged, General Zen allied with the Japanese and attacked General Zhuo, who was accused of murdering his girlfriend. Chen Zhen was captured shortly after being cornered by the Japanese.

Chikaraishi brutally tortures Takeshi Chen. Soon after his friends attacked and destroyed the building where he was being held, the Japanese decided to release the badly wounded Chen. Eventually, Chen awakens from his coma and engages in a brutal battle with the sadistic Takeshi and his 100 men, ending up at a Japanese karate dojo. The same Dojo Chen Zhen killed the Colonel’s father 10 years ago.

The Legend of Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen: Review

The Return of Fist Legend Chen Zhen is a precious piece of Hong Kong fighting/martial arts. The plot of this movie has been done in various Hong Kong movies before. Several Hong Kong films share a similar aesthetic Jet Li Movies: Once Upon a Time in China (1991), Fist of Legend (1994), Fearless (2006), Donnie Yen: IP Man (2008).

The films on the list are similar in their themes of oppression. Donnie Yen’s superhero costume in The Legend of Fist is very similar to Kato’s Green Hornet costume in The Return of Cheng Zhen. Jet Li wore different costumes in his 1996 film Black Mask. Legend of Fist: The Return of Cheng Zhen’s fantasy-style action sequences are very similar to Black Mask. The cast of Legend of the Fist does well as the cast of The Return of Cheng Zhen. The beautiful and sexy Shu Qi shines in this movie.

She excelled in her energetic performance as Fang Ching, aka Kiki, a nightclub singer in Casablanca. He is often drunk throughout the film. Fang Qing shows some heart as the spy Mrs. Yamaguchi, which unfortunately leads to her sad demise.

I’ve seen quite a few Donnie Yen movies from the early days to the last. He just keeps getting better. His martial arts skills are now even more impressive. Her glamorous looks now have even more star power. Of his most recent works, Flash Point was the most liked. SPL was also very good.

Donnie Yen is in top form with his body even more chiseled than it was earlier in his career. From a realistic perspective, Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen has fantasy elements and plenty of conflict. When Donnie Yen dons a superhero costume, he has incredible strength, speed, and agility.

Donnie Yen’s fighting skills are enhanced by wire work and special effects. It’s not like Mr. Yen needs such an upgrade because he’s so fast and badass himself. He usually does a good job of choreographing the fights in his films.

Without explanation, when he’s not wearing the costume, such as at the end of a fight, he’s normal and can be pushed to his limits. Or when Colonel Takeshi and his thugs corner him and beat him up. In Legend of the Fist, Return of Cheng Zhen, it didn’t make sense to me.

The fight sequences of the film were directed by Donnie Yen. He incorporated many elements of mixed martial arts (MMA) into his films and used Wing Chun. This movie is a tribute to Bruce Lee. Donnie Yen adds Mr. Lee’s signature shout-out to the Dojo fight at the end. He also uses a Nunchaku like Bruce Lee did in Fists of Fury.

I couldn’t help but laugh when I first saw Donnie try to do a “Wachoooo” in a dojo fight. It looked a little weird and awkward, but it was all in good fun. Talented actor Anthony Wong always plays the good guy or the villain. He usually plays the role of a mentally ill villain Wong Chi Hang (1993’s The Untold Story), Johnny Wong (1993’s Hard Boiled), the perverted sadistic King Kau (Black Mask 1996) and Sergeant Tung in Beast Cop (1998).

Japanese actor Ryu Kohata also does well. The sadistic main villain, Colonel Takeshi Chikaraishi, is a really nasty guy you just don’t like. Ryu Kohata plays the creep perfectly. The visuals and cinematography of Legend of Fist: The Return of Cheng Zhen are amazing. Shanghai, China in the 1920s looks glamorous and beautiful.

The film’s best-acted action sequence is the World War I battle opening, which will get your adrenaline pumping. Amazing fight sequences will explode at you as a one-man warrior with the non-stop and exciting Donnie Yen. With his stylish fighting skills, he single-handedly takes down the German forces.

It’s unfortunate that there were few highlights after the release of The Legend of Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen. Most of the movie consisted of confusing drama sequences. Character development is often told through flashbacks. After finding out who was responsible for the murder of his teacher 10 years ago, Chen Zhen found a lack of explanation for his character.

Legend of Fist The Return of Chen Zhen has well done music and instrumentals. Taiwanese-born actress Shu Qi sings the songs she sings in Casablanca nightclub. Shu Qi is not a natural singer, but she is sweet with her catchy songs.

The film has graphic content during the violence, such as when a half-naked Donnie Yen is tortured by a profuse blood splatter. The film features insulting language as the Chinese, Japanese, and Europeans living in Shanghai bully each other.

Chinese people are referred to as well-known racial inscriptions by Japanese and Westerners in several scenes. Europeans are called names too. The Japanese say certain things about women. The Japanese soldier says they are only sex objects.

The nationalist themes of “Legend of the Fist” have been exaggerated in Hong Kong cinema by “The Return of Cheng Zhen”.

Even the Japanese on display look really bad. The tense finale is well-choreographed by Donnie Yen and is not short. He does his best Bruce Lee impression and shows how awesome he is in the finale. He falls and gets back up like a superhero.

Overall, Legend of the Fist, The Return of Cheng Zhen is a fun movie. It would have been better if there were more action scenes that showcased Donnie Yen’s fighting skills. The Blu-ray I have of this movie is the special edition that comes with a dedicated disc.

The bonus disc features six behind-the-scenes documentaries. Some interviews with cast members Shu Qi, Anthony Wong, Ryu Kohata, and Donnie Yen.

Each actor/actress discusses their role and their experience working on the film. Donnie Yen discusses the fight choreography for The Legend of Fist, The Return of Cheng Zhen. Also included is an interview with director Andrew Lau, who talks a lot about the film.
