Keith Moon Drove a Ford T-Bucket Roadster!

Hot Rods and Rock n’ Roll are some of the biggest and best acts of the 20th century. They seem to be welded together like two sides of the same coin! I think they were both created by rebellious American kids as expressions of self-expression, so they should draw like magnets together! But not all good music and cool cars are American. The British have given us plenty of both. In particular, he was always attracted to the music of “Who”. When it comes to bands, most people think of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. I think back to my early days, who’s first drummer was Keith Moon. Now most people know that he was a bit of a wild man. What most people don’t know is that he was a car guy. Not just any car! Keith Moon drives a Ford T-bucket Roadster! This is the story of Keith and his un-American hot rod.

So what is a T bucket? Well, the T-bucket roadster is a hot rod built from a Ford Model T production car (or Model T replica parts). That’s right, these amazing hot rods are modified, personalized and customized versions of Henry’s mass-produced cars; Mr. Ford has become known as an affordable everyman’s car, made in any color you want, as long as it’s black!

But as I said at the beginning, this article is about a certain guy and his car, so let’s continue the story as I was told. In the early days of the Who, not all the music they recorded was original. Like most early bands, they covered other people’s material and gave it their own unique tone. Someone thought it would be a good idea to do a cover of Jan and Dean’s “Bucket T”. At least three bands that I know of have covered this song. To be honest, the Who’s version comes last in terms of listenability for me. It just goes to show that not every creative idea has to be bright. As an added bonus, Kate had to take a rare turn on her solo to really secure this version’s modest success! Ringo Starr eat your heart out!

I can only assume that Kate took this photo a little too seriously in the lights. He decided he needed a car to follow the song. In true wild man fashion, Moon found a ready-made car (built by legendary British rodder Mickey Bray) and bought it to add to his existing fleet of vehicles. The only fly is that Keith lost his driver’s license due to his bad boy behavior! Basically, that’s when Keith said, “I can’t drive a 55!” Sammy did his own cover of Hagar’s song. So here it is! That’s how Moon T got his bucket.

So what about cars? Like I said, it was a built car. Bray was a heavyweight in the British hot rod world and later co-founder of the British National Street Rod Association, and this glass-bodied T-bucket was built with a Daimler Hemi V8 sub. I’ve seen “before” pictures of the white pins being removed and the white rags being painted red. At some point the car was updated. Its motor was replaced with a 273 cubic inch Mopar mill and then it was given a psychedelic paint job. That’s exactly how the legendary drummer finished. Oh yeah…yes, it was right hand drive!

This story shows that not all historically significant hot rods were created on American soil by old Yankee ingenuity. In fact, the T-bucket building craze developed almost simultaneously in the US, Canada, UK and Australia / New Zealand. Rockers from across the pond have been bitten by the bug to ride radical bikes for once to compliment their radical lifestyle.
