The Songwriting Habits

Some songwriters are just waiting for inspiration, but may not be successful. Inspiration comes from work; Work hard and practice to get motivated. So how do you practice songwriting?! Really thinking about a topic, looking up words in rhyming dictionaries, playing the piano for just the right chords, etc. All this is just a practice habit.

The more you practice, the more HIT IDEAS you will have!! Writing hit songs is the inspiration for your hard work. For example, you spend many nights racking your brain over a melody (which is to practice and organize your songwriting thoughts), and then when you buy a pair of shoes, a great melody starts playing in your head: This is your hit song.

This means that practice doesn’t produce hit songs or hit ideas, but trains your brain to work better musically and become more aware of the “songwriting ability” of what’s going on around you. In addition to exercise, there are also useful habits. These habits are tools that help songwriters reap the fruits of their practice. Here they are….

The first habit. Always have a notebook with you:

Anytime a song idea strikes you, a beautiful rhyme, a creative metaphor, etc. Then write for review.

Second habit. Always carry a digital recorder with you:

You can write a song using anything… Your “hit” tune won’t disappear. (Sometimes I use a notepad to write down the melody notes – like DBA G.. you can do that too and save yourself singing in the supermarket ;).

The third habit. Ask people what they think of your creation:

It’s always a good idea to show them to your friends. However, showing them to other songwriters is like, “Good job, where are we going to eat?” means better advice and “professional” comments. :).

The fourth habit. Keep your ideas organized:

Now that you’ve got every great melody and catchy lyric down on paper, it’s time to put them together into a great song. But how do you control every melody, title, chord progression, and lyric you think of and write?!! The answer is to organize them in a way that they are easy to find and accessible. You can organize folders and subfolders on your computer, and you can do it the old-fashioned way, using paper in folders. There are software programs that can help, such as TrackNotes from Virtual Studio Systems.

The fifth habit. Practice:

I have talked about this a lot. This is really important…If your brain isn’t used to music, you won’t be inspired by music. Motivation is HARD WORK! Do exercises like reading for successful songwriters, listening carefully to a great song, struggling with a line for days to get the meaning and the right words for a poem, experimenting with chord progressions, and more. There are many things that can be done… PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!

Now, even though I’ve familiarized you with the habits of songwriters, I still have a warning: Not every idea you get will be a moment of inspiration, and you’ll get a lot of “junk ideas.” However, don’t judge the idea the moment you get it; record everything and keep track of everything you think. You can then review these ideas, keep the good ones and discard the bad ones (you better keep them in a safe place, everything will come in handy!).

Finally, you don’t have to go with all these habits. These are habits I developed because I enjoyed them. And you can find and develop the habits you need. The most important habit is the only habit!?!!! You guessed it: PRACTICE.
