Ballroom Dance Instruction – How to Avoid Dancer’s Block

You’ve probably heard of writer’s block when a writer stares at a blank page and can’t think of anything to write about. This is also the case with dancers, when they try to think of what step to take next, nothing comes to mind. You might think that this would only happen to dancers with limited gait patterns; However, it is more common for dancers with extensive knowledge of step patterns.

Through many years of experience dealing with this “condition” personally and with our students, we realized that the problem is not in the knowledge of the style, but in the attitude towards the dance.

If we start dancing around focusing on what style we’re going to make next, two problems tend to arise.

We may not be able to think fast enough for the next model

We will ignore the relationship with our partner and the rhythmic expression of the dance

Three Rs

We’ve developed a highly successful approach to overcoming dancer barriers and enhancing the dance experience for you and your partner. We call it the three Rs:

  • rhythm
  • Communication
  • Repertoire

There are two important things to being a good leader: communication and clarity. You need to know how to communicate with your partner and have a clear idea of the style of move you want to manage. (We will not cover these two elements here as they have been covered in previous issues. We encourage you to review them as they will be very helpful.)

1. Rhythm

Once you’ve made contact and gotten into a comfortable dance position, let the music fill you and begin to move you inside. Don’t rush to make the first move; Only after you are immersed in the music will you be able to express and transmit this feeling to your partner.

2. Communication

Once you get excited by the music and pass the movement on to your partner, just do the simplest of dance steps. Focus on maintaining communication with your partner and making it easy for him to feel his guidance. Let your movements grow together effortlessly.

3. Repertoire

As your movements develop together, you’ll realize you’re dancing without thinking about style; They come naturally to you because you are there in the moment, and they seem effortless. At this point, it’s easy to start focusing on the design. However, don’t worry if your rhythm or relationship with your partner starts to deteriorate. Start paying attention to rhythm and proportion again with your partner, and the repertoire will naturally flow back to you.
