The Day I Was Surrounded With Red And Love
At 6:30 in the morning, I woke up to soft, soothing music instead of the usual political talk on my favorite radio station, Joy FM 99.7, which broadcasts from Accra, the capital of Ghana. The air in the room felt very dry, and the sun shone through the window. All this while I was lying in bed wondering why the usual radio program had been altered in such a way. Radio created a beautiful and loving atmosphere I must say; I looked at the calendar on the wall and it was February 14th. On that day, Valentine’s Day, there was a heart on the calendar.
The radio host of that beautiful morning was not the usual male baritone voice, not the familiar voice that always asked questions about political issues, but the soft, gentle, romantic and inspiring voice of a lady. He announced, “Today is the day of love,” and followed up with other sweet words to remind the audience of Valentine’s Day. He spoke with sweet and cool music. I lay there and listened for half an hour. Then at 7 a.m. he called the listeners and invited them to tell their loved ones whatever they wanted – with the help of radio magic. So the listeners started calling, saying all the nice things they could think of. Words of love like “I can’t look back on anything better than you my dear” or “You mean everything to me, my love.” Almost all callers mentioned their own names and the names of their loved ones, which shows the depth of meaning in what they were saying. At the same time, the presenter drew the audience’s attention to all the activities taking place around the city, especially the celebrations planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
The radio created such a beautiful, happy morning that I wanted to lie in bed listening to the radio all day. However, I had other important things to do in the city, so I got out of bed, showered and made breakfast before heading to Accra Central, the city’s business hub. I left home at 10am and walked about 20 minutes to the bus station. On the way to the train station, almost everyone I met had a beautiful smile on their face, including all the young ones. The girls were mostly seen in red and white dresses. The young men didn’t just leave the day to the ladies; They were also seen dressed elegantly and with neatly trimmed hair. The day looked very promising for the taxi drivers; They were ready to cash in on all the lovers who would take their services. A red heart-shaped balloon (1 or 2) was hung on the door handle of the car and the cabin looked very clean. The sound from the faithful morning’s all-cabin stereo was smooth, mellow, and cool. I got into a taxi and had a nice conversation with the taxi driver on my way to town. He talked about his joys and expectations that day. As we drove along, nearly every billboard along the highway had some sort of message for the day, and the streetlights on the highway had red flags and red heart balloons. As you can guess, Ghanaians love Valentine’s Day, the day of love and romance.
Meandering along the busy roads of the day, I reached my destination at noon; Everyone was rushing to the main business center to buy gifts for their loved ones. Business was brisk and all the shops were overwhelmed with customers, the worst affected shops were women’s clothing, wine shops, gift shops, flowers and card shops. The messages on the cards all have one main message: love. Almost all the shops were full of festive shopping lovers, and almost all the goods in the shops were red, and the people who came to the shops were also wearing red, which was the most attractive thing. It looked as if all the red in the world had been imported into the capital, Accra, for one day. The shoppers were all smiling and going about their business. An atmosphere of happiness and love filled the entire mall. All the gentlemen and ladies were holding gift packages to show their readiness for the occasion. As I walked around, I noticed that the usual mix of urban music—reggae, hip-hop, upbeat, R&B, Francophone music—all the other sounds you might think of as being played in a cosmopolitan city gave way once and for all. short time to soft, romantic music. In addition to music, some radio stations discussed topics related to Valentine’s Day.
After staying in the city for about three hours, I took a taxi and came home. The drive home was not unlike anything I had experienced before. I got home excited and went straight to bed to get an hour’s sleep. I spent the rest of the day watching TV in the living room, and the images on the screen were no different from the day before, mostly the colors.
