How Listening to Music Influences English Language Teaching Learning and Everyday Life

The benefits of listening to music for English and foreign language learners

How can you use music effectively in your English or foreign language classroom? As mentioned in the previous post, listening to certain types of music has many additional benefits over teaching and learning. The influence of music and sound in ELT is well documented. Now let’s continue our quick review of five additional benefits of listening to music.

Additional benefits of listening to music

o Reduce errors

By improving the functioning of the brain and its two brains, the ability to focus and think improves. It directly affects our normal functioning by reducing the number of wrong decisions and responses to problem solving. You’ll be better at whatever you’re thinking and doing.

o Helps digestion

Imagine the nicest, fanciest, most expensive restaurant you can. The food, of course, will be delicious. Are they playing music in the restaurant? Probably yes, but is the music Heavy Metal Rock, Rap, Hip Hop or Acid Jazz? Almost no. Music plays aspirational music designed to create emotional and digestive pleasure. Music has been used since ancient times to somehow enhance the taste of food.

o Helps regulate mood

As mentioned earlier, our mood and state of mind affect or change the way we use music. Music is used to relax people in elevators. The same goes for hospital rooms, medical and dental office waiting areas, and even airports. Helps those with a fear of heights, falling, flying, or the dentist to relax and unwind a little.

o Regulates the pace of activities

Do you work on music? I and many other professionals often do. A Beethoven music station often plays in the background as I write. Other times, I put smooth jazz on a CD-ROM and it might soften the effect it gives me. When I’m on a deadline and need to focus while working fast, faster tempo salsa music comes into my CD player. Fast-food restaurants want you to eat fast, so they play faster-paced music in the background.

o Helps isolate from noise and distractions

If you can’t control external sounds and noises, try playing music that helps you mentally “drown” the distractions. Our ears can choose not what we hear, but what we choose to hear. Play your favorite tunes to drown out distractions and background noise.

Many other benefits of listening to music

These are the hundreds of individual benefits researchers have found associated with listening to certain types of music. Listening to music is beneficial not only in the EFL or foreign language classroom, but also in many other aspects of our daily lives.
