Your Job Shouldn’t Be a Life Sentence

Did you know… 80% of people dislike their jobs – from being mildly irritated to absolutely hating them – and over 33% of them hate their jobs. Calling and purpose

In an interview with a colleague who has been teaching career development professionals for over 40 years, I asked him why he was dissatisfied with his work. “People are not willing to do the work to make a difference!” What he means by this is that most people don’t take the time and effort to learn about themselves and what makes them tick.

Over 20 years of experience in this field has taught me that individuals do not take responsibility for improving their circumstances. A very high percentage remain stuck and miserable because they don’t know what they’d rather do. They cling to the certainty of suffering rather than the pain of uncertainty.

Most people spend more time watching movies than engaging in their own professional development. Self-discovery is for seekers, not complainers.

In my discovery process 25 years ago, I went with a coach for 5 hours a month (2.5 hours each side) for 6 months to understand my calling and purpose.

Bad advice and recommendations from well-intentioned but unrelated professionals

There are career development experts who are lagging behind in their advice. Tools such as “interest calculators” for choosing careers no longer work today. In the U.S. alone, more than 40,000 jobs are not even close to the census. Others try to use National Occupational Codes (NOCs) or Standard Industrial Codes (SICs) that come from outdated and broken systems. There is no NOC or SIC code for my calling, position, or job, and millions of others have similar challenges, so please don’t enter these systems.

In the past, many professionals used personality tests to predict career trends. I can’t say it loud enough. NEVER use personality tests to determine your career path! There is no connection between your personality and your gifts, talents, interests, or abilities. Don’t use personality and personality to predict and choose your career!

Effect of external pressure

I worked with a doctor who hated his profession. When I asked why he was still practicing, his father had always wanted him to become a doctor; Family expectations and pressures drove her down this path, but it wasn’t her passion.

The pressure to remain a doctor after years of training and huge expenses was immense. We made him a career transition plan. When he decides to change, his burden is relieved; he was free to serve his true calling: real estate investor and business consultant. Today, he coaches medical professionals and loves it.

A lot of professionals use the “That’s all I know” excuse. Instead of retraining, learning new things, and stretching themselves, they continue down a path of dissatisfaction. Instead of realizing their potential, they cling to their negative comfort zone.

My wife, Brenda, works as an academic advisor/coach at the university. One day in his office, an international student started crying because he couldn’t pass his science class. Brenda discovers that a student’s parents in Asia own a cosmetics factory; the daughter was destined to become the head of the company’s research and development department. The young woman was very interested in art, acting and music and hated science. He was miserable because of cultural and family pressures.

Money and publicity

Money keeps people stuck. When I did a big study on job satisfaction, I found one result that I didn’t expect. As individuals were promoted, their level of job satisfaction decreased. Society assumes that ambition means upward mobility, but it doesn’t purpose and job satisfaction tasks.

The large retail clients we provide training and advice to are top beauty shop professionals who love their work. His client often encouraged him to become a supervisor. Others like to play the victim and blame others for their situations. They do not take responsibility for their circumstances or their lives and do little about it.

Bloomberg’s latest statistics predict that by 2020, 50% of all US jobs will be “contracted”. The reality is that we all have to move to a business model where we manage our lives using the skills and experiences we have been given. the market. Generations ago, pioneers traveled with nothing more than a dream and turned it into action. They had an entrepreneurial spirit. We’re going back to our roots!

Another truth is that many people are trained in a profession but have not improved or updated their skills. In today’s world, you have to be a constant learner – constantly learning new things in everything you do.

My uncle recently retired after running his own auto repair shop for 40 years. He said, “Ken, the industry has changed so much that I no longer enjoy my job. It’s mostly about computer chips and broken electronics. It’s not what I know anymore.”

The workplace is changing for all of us. The opposite also applies. Due to change, professions and opportunities that were previously uninteresting or uninteresting will now be suitable for you.

There are jobs that haven’t been invented yet. There are new technologies and opportunities. We must be open to new opportunities and scenarios in the coming years.

For some people who hate their jobs, the unhappiness has nothing to do with the job; Their resentment is within them. They will not be happy anywhere. It requires a change in attitude rather than changing jobs.

Some people have a job they love, but the workplace environment is not always pleasant or positive. The number one factor affecting morale in the workplace is not job satisfaction, but the supervisor or direct supervisor. If morale is poor, it is almost ALWAYS the leader’s fault.
