Great Golf at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa
At the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio, you’ll find the gem of a Texas golf resort in the heart of Texas. This beautiful AAA Four-Diamond resort defines the “total resort” with 27 holes of championship golf, a luxury spa, an amusement-filled water park, award-winning dining and entertainment for the whole family. All the fun in the Texas sun is centered around a classic home reminiscent of a grand ranch house.
You’ll never have to leave the resort’s secluded surroundings, complete with incredible amenities and dining options. It’s easy to forget you’re in the charming city of San Antonio, which has its own unique attractions. The resort is adjacent to the Texas Sea World family entertainment area and is a short drive to other San Antonio attractions such as the Alamo, the San Antonio River Walk and the Texas Sikh Flags Fiesta.
But for those of us who love golf, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa offers a round of golf at Hill Country Golf Club. With 27 holes, stunning practice facilities and the design challenges of the Texas hills, you’ll understand why this course was named one of the top 10 new public courses in the US when it opened. The facility has been recognized as one of the top golf destinations in the Conde Nast Traveler golf poll.
Award-winning golf course design firm Arthur Hills and Associates took advantage of the hilly terrain they partnered with in South Central Texas, while also paying close attention to preserving the natural landscape. As a result, there are three different 9-hole golf courses each with their own unique characteristics.
From the moment you arrive at the clubhouse, you’ll receive the country club treatment. Sharp attendants attend to your every need before you hit one of the three 9-hole courses. The Oaks, Creeks and Lakes Course features rolling meadows and wooded ravines, a layout that challenges both your strength and your wits. Beautiful ponds work with strategic bunkers and grassy fairways to test your game on each hole.
Based on four tee options, the nine play par 36s and range from 2,300 to 3,500 yards. With a variety of tees to accommodate players of all skill levels, the course is especially “female-friendly” and has earned a prestigious award on Golf for Women’s Best Fairways list. It’s hard to pick a favorite among the trio, so hopefully you’ll get a chance to play for a few days and experience all three at least once.
The Oaks Course plays 3,438 yards from the black tees and has a nice balance of hole lengths. As the name suggests, you’ll be fighting a tall oak tree, so study the hole in the tee. When you’re setting up for an approach shot on the par 4 hole, you’ll definitely prefer the fairway. Don’t put your driver out on 4 400m holes…you have to think about all the holes at the resort and putting a little putt might be the right play.
The 420-yard par four on the Oaks will test your strength and accuracy. You need length and accuracy to approach the difficult green above the fairway. The fifth and eighth may be the easiest par 3 sets of the entire nine, but be sure to use enough balls as a short putt on the fifth will result in a river penalty. As you approach the massive green with the Creeks closing hole, you’ll finish your side with a downhill par 5 and a chance for birdie.
Another good tip to remember when playing at Hill Country Golf Club is to keep the ball under the hole during the approach shot. It’s not fun going downhill, and if you’re not under the hole, you’ll find the norm for three-putts. While this may be true for most courses, it is more pronounced in the Texas Hill Country.
In 2005, the resort upgraded its original 18-hole course to 27 holes to accommodate a new 9-hole course. Most of the new holes are found on the 3,429-yard Creeks Course. The back nine has great features and offers two holes to score before facing the 222-yard third hole, one of the toughest par 3s on the golf course. Par is an excellent score on this demanding hole.
Then you’ll encounter the “creeks” at the Creeks Course, a true three-putt route to the 538-yard green, water protecting the green. A hard seventh earns the number one handicap for good reason. A creek runs down the left side and is in front of this left side green. You’ll be able to complete the downhill par 5 and get a big drive off the tee. Water and bunkers protect the huge greens, but if you miss them, the green may light up on your approach.
The Lakes Course is the longest of the trio at over 3,500 yards from the back gate. You’ll face your first tough challenge in the long 4th section. Keep your shot to the left to see a rough green angle protected by sand to the left and a long lake to the right. You’ll have fun on the short par-4 fifth, where your best bet is to leave a wedge over the fairway and have a long iron or hybrid to the right of the fairway, with a very sloping green.
After an easy five, you’ll be faced with four required finishing holes. The sixth is the first of two tough par-5 holes on the Lakeside. The tee shot has a dangerous lake to the left and a dry creek bed that twists left off the fairway and then to the right. The second is a narrow landing before approaching a well-protected green with water on the right. After the required par-4 seventh, you’ll wander against the tall trees on the remaining par-5 eight, a 560-yard sweeping dogleg. Stay straight away from the hole or you’ll struggle to the green.
You offer golf club amenities and equipment, including GPS systems in golf carts, precise distances, and helpful tips. Before the tournament, you can make yourself comfortable in the locker room and warm up on the impressive practice facility with its impressive cutting greens, large putting greens and extensive driving range.
It’s easy to work up an appetite during the game, and after posting your scores, you should check out the great food and ambiance in the clubhouse overlooking the courses. Cactus Oak Tavern serves simple yet delicious American fare, including burgers, salads and sandwiches in a casual setting with a TV and pool table. Visit the pro shop for a great selection of resort golf apparel and equipment.
Golf may be your main reason for visiting the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa, but consider why the resort has the word “Spa” in its name. The answer lies in the extraordinary Windflower Hill Country Spa. Adjacent to the golf course, this peaceful spa features late 1800s and early 20th century architecture, including a typical red barn. The Tee Time package is perfect for golfers after a day in the hot Texas sun and includes a golfer’s massage, rejuvenating mini-facial and pedicure.
The spa is designed for the adults in the family, but don’t think for a second that there isn’t something for the whole family to do. The resort really has something for everyone to be as busy or as relaxing as they want. You can cycle around nature trails (bikes and helmets are available for rent) or run along clearly marked trails. The hotel is an Audubon sanctuary, so you can see the 100 species of birds that call this place home. Let the kids play on the playground with slides, swings, ropes and volleyball sets.
But perhaps the most fun will be at the centrally located four-acre water park. Float on an inner tube along the 950-foot Ramblin’ River or play in the sand on the man-made beach. For fun in the water, you can play water volleyball in the freestyle exercise pool. For adults, there’s an adults-only Texas-style pool with a waterfall or an adults-only hot tub in a private basement.
Hyatt Hill Country Resort – Like many resorts in the Hyatt family, the children’s programs are second to none. Camp Hyatt is an award-winning children’s program that takes care of your kids ages 3-12 while they head to the links or spa. In the spirit of Texas, the camp leads activities such as arrowhead hunting, learning to read the stars, and indoor crafts. You can also let your kids experience relaxation at the SPAhhhT youth spa with facials, massages, body care and nail services for under 17s. Teens will also appreciate the Teen Underground where they can check email, play video games, and enjoy smoothies.
With so much going on outside, it’s no wonder classic Hill Country accommodations are stunning. The hotel’s town square is at the center of the resort and is home to a century-old live oak tree. You can sit on the shaded Aunt Mary’s porch in the morning as you plan your day’s activities. Inside, the grand lobby manages to blend the elegance of a world-class resort with a family retreat. The 500 guest rooms surround beautiful courtyards and provide a sense of tranquility at night.
Of course, a world-class resort wouldn’t be complete without great dining, and the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort doesn’t disappoint. If you’re in the mood for a good joe, head to Hill Country Coffee & Creamery. Enjoy a pastry and juice in a comfortable lounge chair with Wi-Fi. Enjoy a buffet breakfast at Springhouse Cafe. For lunch there are delicious sandwiches, soups and salads, while for dinner you can enjoy juicy steaks, perfectly prepared pasta and seafood. The Antlers Lounge is the Hill Country Hyatt’s signature restaurant, named after its 500 pairs of antler chandeliers (which flow naturally). Serving traditional Texan cuisine, you’ll enjoy bison noodles while sitting by a welcoming fireplace and tables set for privacy.
If you’re looking for things to do outside of the resort, you’ll have plenty of options, including the 33-acre San Antonio Botanical Garden, home to specialty roses, a sacred and authentic Japanese garden. The San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium is home to more than 750 species, including kangaroos, rhinos, and panthers. Visit Shamu, Clydesdales, penguins and dolphins at SeaWorld. Head to Six Flags Fiesta Texas for some amazing roller coaster action. Here you will get plenty of adrenaline from the rides known as The Rattler, Superman Krypton and Poltergeist.
With Hyatt’s E-concierge program, guests can arrange all of their activities in advance before leaving home. By logging into http://www.hyatte-concierge.com from the comfort of your computer, you can book dining, recreation, teatime, transportation and more. To provide additional customer service, Hill Country Hyatt participates in the Babies Travel Lite program (www.babiestravellite.com). You’ll have all of your baby’s needs delivered directly to your hotel, from formula to diapers and more, making for a family-friendly vacation.
