Coaching Tools 101 – The Wheel of Life – 11 New and Improved Uses For the Ultimate Coaching Tool
The Wheel of Life may be “old hat” to us coaches, but it’s a powerful visual practice tool with many uses in the coaching world. In fact, it may be the best and most versatile exercise tool in a trainer’s toolbox.
We forget that the wheel of life is still new to most of our customers. Even if they’ve encountered it before, it will tell them something new when they use it again because, like most coaching tools, it can only know how someone is feeling in that moment.
Aside from the common use of the wheel to find balance in life, how can we use the Wheel of Life to help our clients? Here are 11 new and improved uses for The Wheel of Life:
Use the Wheel of Life to help your clients set meaningful goals. Places with low scores are good candidates for larger targets for your customers.
Advice: It’s a useful tool for business and career/executive coaches to bring left-brained clients into a “softer” realm that improves their entire lives. This will definitely benefit their career and business in the long run.
Use wheels to drill down and help your customers gain a deeper understanding of their lives and problems. Ask them to take one of the segments or categories, write down the 8 parts that make up that segment, and dig deeper.
Advice: For example. The “financial” wheel could be saving for a house or wedding, spending less/budgeting, saving for retirement, paying off credit cards, getting a better paying job, etc.
Help your customers see how far they’ve come. You can check in with your clients on a monthly or quarterly Wheel of Life to see how they’re doing and how they’ve improved and grown. Improved scores demonstrate the real value of coaching and help clients see their learning and progress.
Advice: It’s like looking back at old notes and seeing how far you’ve come!
Take the stress out of your customers! What about the stress cycle of the frustration cycle? Take the typical “life balance” category out of the wheel and help your client “think freely” about their challenges. Name the top 8 places that annoy or frustrate them the most. Ask them to rate HOW stressful and frustrating each of their areas is out of 10 — review the results with them.
Advice: The question is, which area gives them the most attention? Any surprises? How can they lower their score?
Help your customers be happy with their lives! What about the cycle of happiness, fun, and even excitement? Ask your client to suggest 8 areas or things that are fun, exciting, or exciting based on what they need/look for. Label the segments of the wheel appropriately and ask your customer to provide an action or promise for each segment. What do they notice? How can they get more out of each segment?
Advice: Help them find more wins, ie. Where one action raises your score in several areas?
Business coaches can use the wheel to define Sales and/or Marketing actions for their clients. Take an empty wheel and add key areas where your customers need to take action. Ask your customers to take action in the next month.
Advice: For example, a Marketing Wheel may include; online social networking, SEO, article marketing, traditional networking, newsletters, trade shows, advertising, seminars.
Priority management. What are your client’s priorities — it could be work, home or life in general. Ask your client to label each segment and identify their top 3 priorities. Then ask for a satisfaction score out of 10 for each area.
Advice: What do they notice? Do they have their priorities straight, or do they need to shift their focus? What steps can they take to improve their scores?
Understand what is important in life. Ask your client to list their priorities, goals, or brainstorm – asking them to list all the things they “Have, Do, Be” in their lives is a great way to do this. Now ask them to consider each priority and goal, circle the “balance” category of the Wheel of Life, and ask, “Would achieving this increase my satisfaction in this area?” and each improved part objective gets one point. Then you check which goal gets the highest and lowest score. What do they notice? What did they learn? It helps people see what can improve their lives rather than what they think will improve their lives.
Advice: Let’s say your customer wants to buy a Ferrari. Will it improve their finances? No. Will it improve their relationships with family and friends? Probably not. Will it improve their career? Impossible. Will it improve their fun? Yes. And so on until you get maybe 2 out of a possible 8 points. Now admit to being a great dad. It might not improve your finances or your career (although you never know), but it will help your family relationships, prosperity, health, and personal growth, so you can get a 6 out of 8.
Identify skill gaps for promotion/new job/career. Use an empty wheel and have your client (or you can do this in advance) list the top 8 skills they need for the job or promotion they want. Now they score against each skill from the current 10 points. Finally, score actions against each skill area in which you need to improve your skills.
Advice: In the section where you scored higher than them, ask, “What can they do to really stand out in this skill?”
Help your clients identify what they are looking for in a relationship. It’s called The Relationship Wheel. So, take a blank circle and ask your client to label the segments that have the 8 characteristics of an ideal partner. This should be done by the customer! Then ask them how IMPORTANT they would give each quality out of 10 points. It helps them determine whether being attractive or romantic is as important as being reliable, having a sense of humor, or being a good parent.
Advice: You can use the strategy mentioned earlier in #8 to take each personality trait they listed and give points to each improved part of the Wheel of Life. Which qualities will really make a difference in their lives?
General planning of operations. Just use an empty wheel to help your customer take action. Write the goal at the top of the page and then ask them to write 8 actions or tasks that make up the goal.
Advice: Have them write on each date — they can use the pie pieces to write the % complete until each piece is finished!
Of course, you’re not limited to 8 segments – it’s just a useful number, and it’s easy to split the wheel! So feel free to use fewer segments or split segments to get more.
Whatever we’re using the wheel for, I like to ask this question when we finish: “So if this wheel represents your life/relationship/career/marketing strategy, is it a bumpy road?”
