Yummy Yummy: Top 7 Business Lessons from the Wiggles

In the early 90s, three Australian junior majors at Macquarie University, Murray Cook, Greg Page and Anthony Field, decided they had a passion for wearing the bright colors of red, yellow and blue (respectively). uniform from the original Star Trek series. They soon convinced Anthony Field’s Cockroach bandmate Jeff Fatt to start wearing purple shirts, dancing at birthday parties and singing about fruit salad and wallabies.

If you’re a parent of little ones, you probably know this Australian quartet as The Wiggles, like The Beatles, Monkees, and ‘N Sync from the Kids’ Pack. They are Australia’s highest paid entertainers, beating Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.

When you watch their DVDs, videos (at least 200 times each) and their TV show on Playhouse Disney four times a day, you know right away that these guys are not an American creation. Gone are Mr. Rogers, Mr. Dress Up, and Bozo the Clown, and today’s grown-up American men dress up in funky costumes and call out to children, “Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy!”

Their loss. The $14 million-a-year Wiggles are the latest children’s sensation, and what they’ve taught us about success and finding passion in life will inspire American company to play guitar and dance with the Wiggles’ pals, Wags the Dog. Henry the Octopus, Dorothy the Friendly Dinosaur and Captain Feathery the Friendly Pirate ask Johnny Depp to slit his own pirate’s throat.

1. Do what the audience needs without lecturing.

The Wiggles do not respond to special after-school messages. Do you want to know the value of a healthy diet? Eat a fruit salad! Exercise? Get up and play Romp Bomp a Stomp with Dorothy! Let’s do a pirate dance with Captain Feathers and run after the Wiggles in our big red car. Songs do what song, dance, and theater were originally intended to do: transmit knowledge. They do it in a fun, smart, colorful and engaging way. Three Wiggles (Murray, Jeff and Greg) with ECE degrees and their own children know that children understand what works for them without being spoon-fed. And Jeff…well, sleepy Jeff shows everyone the value of a good night’s sleep.

2. Find ways to get everyone involved, and you’ll reap the rewards.

According to Rod Harmon’s Knight-Ridder article, Prepare to Wiggle If You Have Young Children , Jeff, who does not have an ECE degree, was shy about interacting with children. Greg, Anthony, and Murray keep calling Jeff to sleep, and the kids in the videos and TV shows, “Wake up, Jeff!” It became so popular that the Wiggles’ “Wake Up, Jeff!” From the first Wiggles videos to the current ones, Jeff is quieter than the other three, but you can see him bonding more with the kids, singing, dancing and playing. The kids are always drawn to someone else, and Jeff stands out even when he recites a poem with a big green dinosaur and dances with a purple dancing octopus. The other three Wiggles seem to encourage his originality. As you can see from all the videos, CDs and Jeff dolls they sell, the method works! When The Wiggles do a doubleheader of their American tour, Jeff will be under pressure from young kids to go crazy for Justin Timberlake.

3) Keep it alive and connected.

The Wiggles can get away with making DVDs, TV shows and albums for their fans throughout their lives. But they all got used to it. Murray, Greg and Anthony were expected to become teachers. Jeff and Anthony played members of the Cockroaches. They include and talk to real-life children in their videos, including family members (as seen in their videos and DVDs). In a scene from “Hoop Dee Doo! It’s a Wiggly Party”, several children are making emu skirts while one of the Wiggles talks to them. The live Wiggles shows, no doubt in contrast to the versions in Asia, which feature native speakers as Wiggles clones (“The Wide World of Wiggles,” Feb. 6, Newsweek Web Exclusive). Even Dorothy has her own dance party. Whether you’re sending a giant green dinosaur with a floppy white hat or just showing up, don’t underestimate the value of making connections and getting involved. It’s also fun to run and jump with the kids (no wonder Anthony, who eats all the time, is still thin!)

4) Don’t follow the crowd or the market.

Most of America’s non-Disney Nick Jr. and non-PBS kids’ shows seem to be 22-minute long commercials for puppets and puppets, as well as passive entertainment for children. The conventional wisdom is: If no hits are made, kids will be bored and there will be no way for them to make money doing something useful. The Wiggles proved that to be false. Instead of sitting around eating sugary treats and watching the kids beat up some weird green monster to reappear in the next episode, they’re dancing and singing with Jeff, Murray, Greg, Anthony and friends. At a time when the prevalence of diabetes and obesity among American children is on the rise, the Wiggles’ approach is not only positive, but the colorful four continue to succeed.

The Wiggles themselves were skeptical that there was an audience for helping children learn through music and dance. The booking agent told them they didn’t have the money, but they stuck to their guns and became hugely popular in Australia. Next up was the US, where the Wiggles are now such a hit at Playhouse Disney that their tours are sold out—they’ve had to add second and third shows in multiple cities.

5) Mastering international and multicultural cultures is not difficult.

The Wiggles don’t need a multicultural sensitivity training class. After all, you don’t have a variety of problems when your friends are crabbing with singing dogs, rose-eating dinosaurs, and underwater bands. They regularly include Australian, Irish, Spanish and other songs in their performances. The franchise is expanding into Asia. If you think this TV show can’t be a hit in Japan, you’ve never seen Pokemon or the anime or the old classic Ultraman.

6) Be loyal to your ethnicity.

Murray, Jeff, Greg and Anthony are undeniably Australian (again, four American guys wouldn’t do what they did), but Dorothy is a bit more British. Songs like “Willaby Wallaby Woo” speak to their heritage, and you won’t see them suddenly moving into a mansion in Malibu pretending to be rich Hollywood Yanks with no families or kids.

7) Your family life only enhances your work and passion.

Three of the Wiggles are married, Jeff seems to be too sleepy, Anthony was voted Australia’s Most Eligible Bachelor before he got married. These spouses have built their careers around children and, as mentioned in point 3, regularly include their family in their videos. A family eating fruit salad stays together. If you give joy to millions of children, it does not help to have a positive effect on your family.

Does all this inspire you to Wiggle and get up and dance? Maybe if you have kids. But let it inspire you to follow your passions in work, family, and life. Learn from four career advisors: Greg, Murray, Jeff and Anthony. Hey, eat some fruit salad. You need health, mate.

Let’s move!
