Family Guy: A Top 5 List of Satirical Episodes

One of the most irreverent and blatantly vulgar shows on network television today is Family Guy. Family Guy’s fan base is huge, almost as big as its detractors, and when the show went off the air in 2002, it only took three years to bring back stellar DVD sales and adult swimming ratings. One of the keys to Family Guy’s formula is taking 80 years of popular culture staples and poking fun at them.

The list of great Family Guy episodes is huge, but where do you start when you have 75 episodes (that is, of course, if you decide not to watch every episode five times). Some of the best episodes from the Family Guy archives are the ones that are the most brutal in what they satirize. Without further ado, the five best Family Guy episodes

1. There’s Something About Paulie – Season 2 In this installment, Peter is enlisted by Jersey mob relative Big Fat Pauly to watch over Paulie when he accidentally brings her along while visiting Quahog. Hit Lois. Chaos ensues and ends with a godfather’s daughter’s wedding and Tiramisu. A classic family lads comedy with some tough sides.

2. Mr. Griffin Goes to Washington – Season 3. Peter nearly gets fired for skipping work at a baseball game. He is lucky enough to keep his job when the El Dorado Tobacco Company buys the company. They send him to Washington as a tobacco lobbyist, and Stewie sees his mistake after he starts smoking and coughing. Classic political culture and films appear. Bob Dole, Martha Stewart, presidential candidates Gore and Bush.

3. From Method to Madness – Stewi goes to acting school, meets Olivia, and a classic get-rich-quick story unfolds, after which Stewi fails and Olivia lives without him. One of my favorite scenes of the entire series comes when Olivia says to Stewie, “You’re the weakest link.” Stewie responded in classic Stewie fashion with a sustained attack on his mind.

4. Brian returns to college – Brian lost his new job at the New Yorker because he didn’t finish his college education. After that, he decided to return to Brown. The Stewie/Brian tag along the storyline is fully established by this point in the series, so Stewie goes along with it. Stewie enjoys college life and Brian tries to skip his senior year. Rocky-themed academic battles and classic college movie stereotypes make this a great episode.

5. Da Boom – An oldie but a goodie, playing in the midst of all the Y2K fears of the late 90s. The episode, which airs the day after Christmas 1999, follows the destruction of Earth’s infrastructure and the Griffin family’s post-apocalyptic journey to find the Twinkie factory. The mutation of their friends and the reformation of the landscape is reminiscent of the post-nuclear classics of the 50s and 60s, where Stewie eventually turns into an octopus. The end of the episode is a flashback to the whole Dallas fiasco when Bobby takes a shower and Pam explains his “dream”. At the end of 1999, the height of almost mass hysteria of irony and satire that was almost universally felt.

Family Guy is more than a great episode of Five. Up until a small portion of Season 4 in 2005, the show was a hit, and every vignette set by Seth MacFarlane in suburban Rhode Island is a joy to watch over and over again.
