I Know a Man Who Can Take You To Narnia

Not actually Narnia, but in the same place in England where Narnia was born in the mind of CS Lewis, author of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the entire Chronicles of Narnia series.

His name is Ron Brind, and he was a childhood friend of Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham in the 1950s, and was a frequent visitor at Lewis’ old home in Oxfordshire.

This wonderful tour takes place in Oxfordshire, England and visits attractions such as Lewis’ former home ‘The Kilns’ and the beautiful Holy Trinity Oxford Cathedral, Lewis’ final resting place.

The approximately 3-hour tour begins outside the Randolph Hotel on Beaumont Street, Oxford, famous for its association with Colin Dexter, author of the hugely popular Inspector Morse novels, and a frequent visitor to the Randolph. Along the way you’ll see the remains of the old ‘City Walls’, Magdalen College in Longwall Street, where Lewis was elected a Fellow in 1925, Magdalen Bridge, Oxford’s famous May Day celebration, and Magdalen College School. Doug attended.

You will be taken through Headington to visit The Kilns, one of JRR Tolkien’s former homes, Lewis’ former home, which Mrs Moore, Jack and Major Lewis bought together in October 1930. A short walk away is the lake that gave way to Punt Lake from the murky depths owned by Lewis. How did the punt get there? Find out on the tour!

As you leave the kiln, you will pass the local watering hole used by Jack and Varney and travel to Holy Trinity Church in Headington Quarry, where Mr Tom Honey promises you will be able to see the inside of this beautiful building. Outside the churchyard you will see the graves of CS Lewis and Mrs Janie King Moore, the mother of the author’s close friend Paddy Moore.

You’ll also see the entrance to the Mayfair Suite at the former Wingfield Hospital at the Nuffield Orthopedic Centre, which was blessed in December 1956 during Jack and Joy’s bedside ceremony because death was imminent. The final stop will be Oxford Crematorium to see the Joey Davidman memorial plaque in Chapel 2, if you want to know exactly where Joey’s ashes were scattered.

The tour ends at the Eagle and Child pub on Oxford’s iconic St Giles Street. This famous watering hole was frequented by Lewis and his circle of intellectual and literary friends known as The Inklings. Here you will be presented with a personalized certificate of your visit to The Kilns – a reminder of your tour and the legacy of Lewis.

So while he can’t take you to Narnia, he can take you back to where Narnia was born.
