Girl Scout Songs – What Shall We Sing Tonight?

Singing Girl Scout songs wasn’t something I did much as a man! I think girls should be more sophisticated, classy and elegant. I’m sure they should sing the same song you sing at church camp. The song they sing must be very different from what the Scouts used to hear around the campfire. Is it true?

I have two girls who told me what kind of songs they sing, and I tell you, they sing the same songs as boys. Maybe even worse! I think some of the songs they sing would make even a boy scout blush!

Don’t worry; I’m not promoting that kind of song here.

Whenever I ask one of the young ladies I know to tell me their favorite Girl Scout song or Campfire Girl song, the first thing I say is Princess Pat. Here it is, along with other camp songs popular among Princess Pat, Girl Scouts, Fire Girls, and other girl organizations.

  • Princess Pat:

This song is a favorite song of girls. This song is included in its entirety in The Great American Campfire Songbook. It is a sing-and-repeat song; The leader sings a line and the others repeat it. There are also fun actions to follow: Princess Pat (like a tree, hands in the air like a tree) She went across (wavy hands like an ocean) Seven Seas (hold up) Then 7 fingers form the letter “C”) She went on a boat (wavy) hand) Channel too (draw channel with 2 hands, then show #2) And with yourself (throw sack over shoulder) Rick-a- bamboo. (draws a wavy shape in front and bends knees as you go down) Rick-a-bamboo (same as above) What’s that? (shrugs) That’s what Princess Pat did (beats one fist with the other). (Egyptian pose) It’s red and gold (one hand on the hip, the other hand up) And it’s purple. (reversed position) That’s why they (clap hand around mouth yelling) It’s called bamboo rick. (as before) Now Captain Jack (salute) His mighty crew (again salute) They too (as before) crossed the channel. (Same as before) But their ship sunk (plugs nose and goes down) So is yours (points to audience) If you don’t get it (throws invisible bag over shoulder) Rick-a-bamboo. (same as before) Princess Pat (same as before) Captain looked at Jack (hand over eyes like a peephole) He took him in (turns him around as if catching a fish) And brought him back (pats him gently on the back) He saved his life. (salute) And his crew too (salute again) Do you know how (shrug) Rick-a-bamboo. (same as before)

  • Little Miss:

I really don’t know how popular or how widespread this song is. One of my nieces taught me this. I thought it was funny so I included it. I don’t know of any measures, but there is definitely a possibility. Includes: Music and chords included in the fire song book. Little miss, out to get flowers. Up to his ankles stood in the grass. He saw the bird and thought of turkey feathers. It broke his heart and he took the farmer home.

  • I like bananas, coconuts and grapes:

This is another favorite for girls at camp. Replacing all the vowels with ‘e’ or ‘a’ or ‘o’ or whatever can get really silly. There are 5 vowels, but you can use different pronunciations for those vowels. You sing in the first verse: I like bananas, coconuts, and grapes. In the second verse, replace all the vowels with e and sing: E leke benenes, cecenets end grepes. In the third stanza, change all the vowels to other vowels and sing o, etc.: O loke bononos coconots ond gropes. You can continue with whatever vowel you want to use.

  • Happy Wanderer:

Just a happy song. It’s perfect for the outdoors and a great hiking song.

  • I love mountains:

Another happy song. And a nice hiking song.

  • Cannibal King:

Another popular girl camp song. The chorus moves pretty fast, but that’s what makes it fun.

Here are a few good Girl Scout songs. If you have any favorites that I haven’t included, please email me with your feedback. I can always add more to my songbook.
