Top Five Reasons to Sing Out Your Stress

The most common comment people hear when they find out I’m a music therapist is, “I wish I could sing!” or “Oh, I like to sing, but I’m not good at singing in front of anyone.” Some of these people tell me that when they were children, a parent, teacher, or someone else told them that they needed to speak their words because they didn’t have a good enough voice.

Singing is our birthright! Singing is a natural and pure expression of our joy in being alive and our love for music. Here are five reasons why I sing:

1. To connect with our body: We sing with our whole body. Because chanting is so closely related to breathing, chanting helps us to “be in our body” and let go of our thoughts (or worries) that we do most of the day. Singing can be a joyful activity and releases endorphins (feel-good chemicals produced by the body).

2. To connect with yourself: Cranking up a meditation tune, singing along to a favorite song, or simply humming to yourself is a way to tap into your inner self and see what’s going on there.

3. To connect with others: Meditation, prayer, sing-alongs, concerts, even singing with others over the phone or the Internet can help us feel very deeply that we are all truly connected.

4. To Express Your Feelings: Singers, songwriters, and composers express our emotions in ways we never could – if there’s a song you want to say or something you want to say, sing along (remember, it’s only for you and it’s not about “sounding nice”).

5. To increase your sense of well-being: Whatever you focus on, you will invite more into your life. You can choose an upbeat, happy, festive song to sing.

So sing! Be proud of your unique voice. Experiment with what works for you – make a note of what you notice in your mind and body when you sing a particular song. Then you can choose the right song and use the power of chanting in your life.
