Jealous Again – Jealousy Among Musicians

Jealousy – Do you feel it? Do you feel it in others? Does it get in the way of your relationships with other musicians? Does it shake your faith? Is it hindering your creativity? Here are some questions to help you get clearer about jealousy in your life.

1. What is my jealousy trying to teach me? Generally, when I have strong feelings for a particular person, it’s because that person represents something about me that I can’t stand right now, or because that person embodies something that I want to do or have. I remember being in a high school art program and being incredibly jealous of a fellow singer. What I painfully knew (I couldn’t say it at the time) was that this man could fully express himself and his talents, and I couldn’t. I used to sing better at home in my bedroom than in front of others and THIS was the situation I couldn’t stand. By doing what I couldn’t, he brought my biggest challenge into the limelight. This made it almost impossible to have a good relationship with him.

2. Instead of comparing our work, how do I define myself as a musician with this person? What are the opportunities for cooperation, mutual support and exchange of ideas? Can I receive gifts, feedback, support, and love from this person? What can I give to this person in return? Even the most famous and successful musicians are people like you. Find the connection. What would I give a new musician?

3. How can I develop confidence in my unique message and communicate it accurately? I will never sound like this musician or anyone else. Influences may be heard, comparisons will inevitably be made, but my words will never sound exactly like theirs, because my “story,” my life, my collection of experiences, qualities, strengths, and challenges are entirely unique to me. When I respect my uniqueness, my confidence increases and comparing myself to others makes no sense – there is nothing to compare to. This quote from Martha Graham better explains what I mean.

This expression is unique because there is only one of you in all time, and it flows through you as life force, life force, energy, revival. And if you close it, it will never exist or disappear with any other means. There will be no more in the world. How good it is, how valuable it is, and how it compares to other expressions is none of your business. To keep the channel open, it’s your business to make it clear and direct. – Martha Graham, quoted by Agnes DeMille, Martha: The Life and Work of Martha Graham

4. How can I take this person’s attention away from me and what can I do to improve my own success and creativity? If I’m jealous of someone winning a singing contest, I can ask myself: how many singing contests have I participated in? If I’m jealous of their fan base, I can ask myself: how am I attracting new fans, and how am I deepening my relationship with the ones I already have? If I’m jealous of the number of songs they’ve written, I can ask myself: what would I choose to do with my time instead of writing songs?

5. Now that I have learned from him, how can I let go of my jealousy? In life, we often hold on to our emotions long after they have benefited us. They become comfortable, familiar, and secure rather than working to get to the other side. However, they can weigh us down and block our creativity. Try the FEEL analog. First, feel your feelings – don’t suppress them, but feel them. Then express your feelings – write about it, sing a song, talk to someone you trust, play an instrument or express it through art. Then, as mentioned above, explore the feeling – what it is trying to teach you, etc. And finally Let it Go. It can be as simple as saying a short prayer or affirmation (“I’ve let go of jealousy,” or “I have valuable and unique gifts”), or writing a feeling on a piece of paper and tearing it up.

Jealousy teaches us a lot. So pay attention when it appears in your life. If you notice jealousy in others, put yourself in their shoes and help them identify with you. Reveal your humanity. Let them know you have something to offer.
