Movie Review: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey – Foul Play
There are a million reasons why any director decides to make a film, but you’ll never understand what drove him to make Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. Gowariker’s films, which are inspired by true events that took place 80 years ago, often show a complete lack of passion for his films.
Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey story
Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is about motivated youngsters inspired by Surjya Sen (Abhishek Bachchan) who surprises the British Empire with a series of raids in Chittagong. Based on Manini Chatterjee’s novel, Die and Die: The Chittagong Uprising of 1930-34, the film begins with a group of teenagers who are taken away from their football field by British soldiers who set up a camp on their playground. Enraged by their ruler’s high-handedness, the boys seek out schoolmaster Surjya Sen (Abhishek Bachchan), a famous revolutionary, and ask him to reclaim their land. Surjya promises to do something, but a few days later the boys show up again, this time angry that they want the freedom to want more than just the football field. The British decided to take up arms against Surjya, convincing his comrades to include the boys in the army’s plan to attack the British armory and occupy Chittagong.
Gowariker’s screenplay fails to connect the viewer with what is happening on screen in terms of realistic story and characters like that day. The story, spread over four years, feels like a separate TV show forced upon you. Gowariker splits the story of the rebellion into two distinct parts, and while it’s not a bad choice to devote most of the screen time to the build-up, the execution ends up half-baked. Gowariker’s screenplay focuses heavily on the transformation of aimless teenagers into freedom fighters through long and sometimes rather boring ‘training’ sequences that hardly ever happen.
Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, which inspired a forgotten chapter in Indian history, had a great foundation in the form of Chatterjee’s book, but Gowariker’s lack of interest, especially in the first half of the film, makes it a failed opportunity. Leave aside the fact that the characters of Kalpana Dutta (Deepika Padukone) and Pritilatha Vaddadar (Vishakha Singh) who join Sen and his army are not fully explored, but strangely, they are treated like props. The post-mutiny years are as important as the plot, but in the second half, Gowariker simply breezes over vital events like the attack on Pahartali and the entire underground resistance.
Weak points in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey
Apart from the lackluster screenplay, the acting all round makes Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey a let down. Bachchan plays Sujya Sen with strange conviction, sporting an almost goofy smile in the film’s best parts, Padukone looking lost, and Sikander Kher as Nirmal forgetting to change his face. All the lead actors are so clearly nuanced that the film has a stage and theatrical feel to it. Some of the supporting boys give great moments, like at the end of the film when four of them kill themselves before being captured by the British.
Unlike Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie, where all the characters speak German but without English accents, Gowariker’s decision to use a heavy Bengali accent is almost comical. Everyone seems to have a roshogolla in their mouth and try as hard as they can while speaking, someone cracks up when they say ‘Kolpona’ ‘Shurrrrjo’, ‘Gonesh’; Either the actors should have been guided by an accent and dialogue coach, or Gowariker should have stuck to plain Hindi.
For a director who used to set the bar high when it came to casting actors to portray leading characters in Hindi films (Captain Russell from Lagaan), it’s ironic that Gowariker is suited to mediocre and utterly unconvincing British actors. Gowariker, who barely sees the other side of the episode as a whole, completely steals the heart of Sen and his comrades in his portrayal of the British officers. Imagine Bob Christo trying to get serious and you’ll understand how bad the foreigners are in Helein Hum Ji Jaan Sei.
Final words about Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey
Like all Ashutosh Gowariker films, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is blessed with great production design, the period details are impeccable, but like What’s Your Raashee, the music hits once again. Sohail Sen’s music can evoke traces of AR Rahman, and while the title track isn’t bad, the score lacks punch and its non-stop background score stirs the senses.
There are some scenes at the end that will really blow your mind, but that’s all Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey has. What’s sad is that Manini Chatterjee’s introduction is included in Gowariker’s entire film. Gowariker’s nonchalant and nonchalant attitude leaves you feeling angry and cheated. If a true story about a group of teenagers led by an idealistic teacher who gave their lives for a dream that most had ignored doesn’t inspire passion, I don’t know what will.
