Self-Care for Creative Artists: 5 Ways to Start Today

Self-care is the path to creative expression. By focusing more on self-care, you can more easily access your creativity, inspiration, inner strength, and resilience. You will also have more energy, more patience with others and yourself, and more confidence in your work.

Start. Have you been procrastinating? Do you need to update your resume to be ready for the next audition or show? Editing the last chapter of your book? Call the gallery owner? Want to learn this new part? Well, just start. Set your timer for 15 minutes and remind yourself that you can stop when it goes off.

Stop. Stop for just five minutes today. Stop and listen to what your inner soul is trying to tell you (if it can get your attention). This process will be easier and more effective if you first consciously relax your mind and body – just take a few deep breaths or listen to your favorite relaxing music for a few minutes. If you have time, try a gradual relaxation exercise, imagining a ball of light moving through your body, relaxing each muscle.

Turn around. Turn your negative thoughts around. When you start beating yourself up for procrastinating, remind yourself that you worked on that project for 15 minutes today! If your inner critic is telling you otherwise, try this approach in my Performance Readiness worksheet. Write down everything your inner critic is telling you. Now imagine saying these things to a small child. Then, with each word you say, write down what you say to comfort and encourage that child, and teach them to look at things from a different perspective.

Play. Speaking of children, just for today, treat your art like child’s play. Paint with your non-dominant hand, play a new instrument, or write songs and stories using only words that start with “d”. What other fun things can you try?

Relax. Do whatever it takes to get a good night’s sleep. And for today, rest when you are tired. Not getting enough rest and sleep is one of the most direct ways to harm yourself and your health. When was the last time you got out of bed and wanted to start the day and felt completely rested?
