Everything I Need to Know I Learned From a Stack of Pancakes

“Daddy, wake up! It’s time to get up!” I woke up to a small hand shaking my shoulder. “I’m hungry for pancakes,” said my five-year-old son. “I want a pack of pancakes!” My son is having another growth spurt. She usually asks for one pancake, but this time it’s a “stack.”

I walk into the kitchen, grind fresh coffee beans, fill the coffee maker with water, and add the aromatic drops. I mixed the dry ingredients with the water and added chopped ripe bananas and vanilla. In a few minutes, I prepared several pancakes, and the grumpy boy sat down at the table. I flipped a couple on his plate and he said, “I can cut them myself, Dad.” As he picks up his knife and fork and begins to cut, he seems very proud of his newfound independence. “I really can’t do it with two pancakes,” he said, after a moment’s thought.

I finished cutting her pancakes and sat down to drink coffee while she ate. I was getting ready to write my (almost) daily blog post, and I’m always looking for inspiration, so I knew there had to be a story or metaphor for my morning pancakes somewhere. A few things started to come to mind, so I sat down with my laptop while my son ate and came up with the following principles. Call them “Pancake Principles” if you will, but be amazed at how we can learn important life lessons from a stack of pancakes!

When it comes to pancakes, our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs. My son only managed to eat half of the pile. He really wanted that whole stack, but when it finally came, he couldn’t really finish what he started. When it comes to life and what I want to achieve, I often want to absorb more than I can handle. Often I think I have more time than I have, more money to spend more than I have, or more energy than I can devote to a marathon project. If I keep doing this, I will never reach my goal. A side effect of this is a sense of failure. I get that “I can never do anything” feeling.

I’m learning to break my goals down into smaller chunks in order to succeed. I used to get overwhelmed when I worked on big projects and all the little pieces blew up in my face. I called them obstacles because they were slowing me down. Now, when I break things down and think about the pieces, I can see these “obstacles” as elements of a project and plan for them. When I do this, everything is smoother and no more indigestion!

Instant isn’t always the best. It’s easy to make a “just add water” type of pancake mix, but you can make egg whites that taste like “made from scratch” and taste like real buttermilk. How often do I choose ready meals? -In your personal life, instead of spending more time designing and adapting to the needs of your colleagues, family, and yourself, have you repaired your life and relationships? I’m learning to slow down and spend more time paying attention to the details, so I get the satisfaction of knowing I’ve covered more miles. It sends a message to my family, friends and colleagues that they matter and everyone is a winner!

Pancakes can burn if you’re worried. How many times have I made the first pancakes for my son, then poured batter into a hot pan, butter, syrup, cut, and milk? In between distractions, I got the chocolate brown on the first side of the pancake when something started to burn. I worry about work, so everything sits on the burner for a long time and starts to burn. I can do a project at home, work it out in my head until it’s perfect, and never get it done, or take too long. If we deviate from the path of our goal, focusing on side things (or striving for unattainable perfection) begins to “burn in the pan” of the main thing. Let’s stop being trapped in that cycle.

Adding something fun to the batter makes pancakes even more delicious. I like to add applesauce to my dough. Sometimes I add really ripe bananas, vanilla and salt. I personally don’t care for it, but some people like chocolate chips. My wife has a recipe for a can of pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice waffles. It is very satisfying. Try to live life like you eat pancakes once in a while. What can you do in a relationship or at work that equates to chopped nuts on banana pancakes and peaches and pecans to butter? I saw a recipe for New Orleans-style Praline Pancakes, which is great for building a work ethic or a relationship with your wife and kids! The sky’s the limit, and I guarantee it’ll all be a lot more fun.

When it comes to cutting pots, kids may think they can, but they need instruction to learn how. I was happy that my son had the confidence to cook his own food. Do you know how long we were chopping his food? This was a landmark for me! But I had to help him when he said he really couldn’t do it with 2 pancakes. But I took the utensils and made them for him. He had the confidence to try, but I didn’t follow through. It was faster to do it for him. Whenever possible, we need to help our children (and adults too) “cut pancakes” instead of making them for them, because they are faster. I’ve come to understand better that time is one commodity that children often have. Why not let them use it to make something for themselves – even if we have to put up with it taking 5 times as long as us to do it.

Well, I could go on, but I’ll stop. I think you get the point. I hope your next lazy Saturday morning is great. Take time to reflect on your relationships with your children, co-workers, significant others, and friends. Find out where you stand with these “pancake principles.” And while you’re at it, make an exotic pancake combo to share with someone special.
