You’ve heard the saying, “There are no bad students, only bad teachers.” Or maybe you’ve heard the opposite saying, “There are no bad teachers, only bad students.” But the difference between teacher and student is strange when you think about it. Every great teacher is a great student (though more often than not the other way around) because learning anything to a high level of competence requires a ridiculous amount of research, analysis, trial and error, drive, and effort. If you’re stuck between a teacher who’s good at what they do but not great at explaining, or a teacher who’s okay at what they do but explains well, always choose the more experienced teacher. However, understand this basic fact: the responsibility to solve this problem is yours alone. You need to look at the information you are given, analyze it, compare it to what you know, and constantly review and update your mental model as you receive new information. It can be a frustrating process, but if it’s something you love to do, you’ll do it anyway. If not, maybe it’s not something you’re really into, but that’s another post.
After all, you are both a student and a teacher. You are a student of your own art and a teacher of your own art (and maybe at some point to others). YOU know best how you learned. You know you’re learning style. Even the greatest master teacher in the most amazing studio or master class in the world can’t teach you anything terrible. You take what they say, analyze it, and then teach it to yourself. They give you better quality information than you can get anywhere else. Be your own teacher, no one else will do it for you.
At the beginning of this article, I mentioned that successful people in any field learn to look outside themselves. For singers, the teacher fills this role, but so does the video camera! In fact, videotaping yourself is one of the best and fastest ways to see and hear your mistakes, practice and make a clear list of things you need to fix. It may seem like a teacher can’t address a problem you’re having or say it directly without causing emotional discomfort, but if you see yourself on camera, you’re confronting yourself.
I forgot to mention that if you are not willing to be honest with yourself, no video recording will produce good results. This doesn’t mean beating yourself up or being self-deprecating, but it does mean that you look for flaws, such as a tense jaw, and then seek to correct them. You may not always have a good teacher nearby, or you may not be able to afford them every time (they’re expensive!), so taping yourself is a very cheap and effective tool for growth. An iPhone camera will do, but most portable recorders don’t pick up a wide enough range of frequencies to lose detail in your audio, so I’d suggest buying a slightly better microphone.
