Elvis Presley – The King of Rock ‘N Roll

Elvis Presley is known worldwide as the king of rock and roll. However, he transcended genres with his musical genius and magical voice that conquered gospel, rhythm, blues, country, rockabilly and even pop. As if that wasn’t enough, he was also the main star of the film. But Elvis has always shied away from the title given to him by fans and the media.

One evening in 1965, as I was doing his hair at Graceland, Elvis and I were discussing parts of his singing career and the various styles and categories of music he was popular with. Suddenly, Elvis leaned back in his chair and said, “You know Larry, people call me the King, like I invented rock ‘n’ roll or something. No way. It’s not like that. Rock. n’ roll is in the deep south. it all goes back to when it all started, when Negroes worked all their lives in the fields and were slaves. I mean those poor people; they really knew what suffering was. That was what it was all about. They sang to get through the day, they sang their hearts out I mean their souls were singing and crying. From sunrise to sunset they all sang. , making up the words as they walked through the cotton fields.

“Listen, that’s where most of our real gospel music comes from. What the white people did was copy them. Their slave music got right into their churches; then the white people took it and started singing slave songs. Their way in the white churches . Then their music changed and went beyond the church into honky-tonk and Dixieland. It all happened here on the Mississippi Delta, and then on Beale Street in downtown Memphis. New Orleans. Then the blues, ragtime, and jazz first appeared in the north. It spread to St. Louis and Chicago, and then it evolved into rhythm and blues and rock and roll right up to our time. To be honest, Larry, I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time, and what I did was take their music and was to present it to the white people.”

I remember a night in Las Vegas in December 1976. We had just left Elvis’ dressing room and were in the elevator on our way to his penthouse at the Hilton International. Two girls ran up and shouted, “Elvis, Elvis, you’re the king!” He smiled and pointed up as the door closed. “There is only one King. I may have a saddle, but I don’t sit on a throne.”
