Why We Can’t Get Enough American Idol
Now we are going to the final 12. American Idol 2006 is in full swing, and as Randy Jackson says, “we got something hot, dog.”
When my wife and I watch it every night, we can’t help but be captivated. Even my 3, 4,5 year olds love what they call “Singing Shows”. With all this interest, I wonder why?
Every year it’s the same format, the motley brutality of the judges, the same Ryan Seacrest. The banter between Seacrest and Simon Cowell is predictable; we can see it coming a mile away. Paula Abdul is always the softie, commenting on the sexiness of guys like Ace Young and wondering who’s the truth or Corey Clark. Randy Jackson suggests “it was aaaiight” or “it was aaaiight” or “it was quiet in a few parts”. Or he shouts “dog pound” and begs for their guffales, chorttels, and choodles. I’m not sure what Jackson is talking about – next year I want Jackson’s language decoder key. And Cowell, he’s always honest, sometimes brutal, and uses the word “terrible” all the time.
I ask myself why I, including most pockets of the American demographic, tune in to a show that transforms singers with guts, passion, a bit of talent and stage presence into international pop icons.
Well, I thought about it for a long time. And I think it comes down to one thing. Transcendence: We all see a little bit of ourselves or who we thought we wanted, or should, or would have liked in some participant. And it gives us one more opportunity to share in our dreams of becoming the next American Idol, the next pop icon.
Look at it on several levels.
First diversity, there is an idol we can all relate to. We have Ace Young, who is young, maybe too good-looking to be taken seriously as a talented singer, and maybe even better as a 25-year-old actor. He should draw young and middle-aged women. My wife even said, “He looks good.” Of course, I’ll be wrong, because I can’t offer an opposing position, all I can say is “you know what, you’re right”.
Next, let’s look at Mandisa. Yes, she is big, but the girl can sing. She has a beautiful smile reminiscent of Aretha Franklin. We can’t help but be drawn to her.
And Bucky Covington. He has a Southern, Texas swagger. There aren’t any other guys with long blond hair who wear cowboy hats, and yes, that demographic is represented.
Katharine McPhee has a beautiful voice and smile and is very calm; his talent is obvious. Theater artists adore him.
Paris Bennett has so many looks that I’m not sure if I’m really the same person. He can really put on a show. I used to think he was really cute, but now I think he’s just being mean and trying to beat this thing.
Taylor Hicks’ dance moves are… well, I’m not sure what. Maybe he’s too caffeinated like Joe Cocker or Bob Seger. He is something of an anomaly, but very charming and charming.
Elliot Yamin is very close to his mother. The guy wears an insulin pump every day to fight diabetes. I’m not really a fan, but my heart bleeds for her; No matter how he sings, you can’t help but respect his artistry. What about Kelly Pickler? What did Simon call her “Naughty little minx”? And he asked what happened. Well, young people between the ages of 16 and 40 want to explain to him in detail. That cute, sassy, little blonde thing is what young dads focus on. Oh, you’re like, “Can she sing?” What do you ask? Does it really matter?
We have rockers represented by Chris Daughtry. Simon certainly wasn’t crazy about Chris’ performance this week. But the guy’s got energy, and he pulls off the bald stuff really well. He’s not classy, but he’s classic – he rocks.
Idol offers validation and belonging for all of us. The show hosts pop music icons every week. Last year we had Elton John. Shakira and Wyclef Jean, the modern sensation of the past week. Earlier this year we started with Stevie Wonder and then Barry Manilow. Love them or hate them, they’re legends, true influences on R&B, pop, soul, and now delivering samples and hooks that have us jamming to our iPods. Listening to their music takes us back to the 70s, 80s and 90s when we first heard it. They create nostalgia for days and times gone by and transport us to the excitement of another era.
American Idol allows us to move into the contestant experience. We can live their joy at being on top of the world when they hear “You’re not in the bottom three.” Unfortunately, when Seacrest says “this is the end of the road for you,” we share their disappointment.
We relate to them, their accent, skin color, style, smile, personality and talent. For a moment in each song, we’re on stage with them and in the spotlight. In a matter of seconds, we will be an American idol and the next pop icon with this stream. All the fear, stress and pain of everyday life are gone and everything is normal in our world.
That, my friends, is the secret to American Idol’s success. It allows us to escape from everyday life and become stars. The American psyche cannot resist the opportunity to become a star, an American Icon, even for a moment.
Nothing wrong with that at the end of a long day.
