Your brain is like a computer. Your beliefs are the programs you put into your brain. Human beliefs are divided into two types. These are; beliefs about what produces pleasure and beliefs about what produces pain. We strive to achieve what we believe will bring us pleasure. We try to avoid these things that we believe will cause pain. Any two people can have very different beliefs about the same thing.
One person believes that skydiving brings pleasure. Another person believes that skydiving causes pain and death. One person thinks smoking is good. Another believes that smoking is a bad habit that leads to early illness and death. One person believes seat belts prevent serious injury or death. Another is that the seat belt is restrictive and restrictive.
The programs you choose to run will determine your results. If you’re running a spreadsheet program on your computer, a few keystrokes will produce specific results. If you’re running a word processing program, the same keystroke will produce different results.
We all have things in our lives that we want to change. Temporary changes can be made through disciplined behavior modification. Real lasting change requires a change in belief. Unless you change your brain’s programming, you will revert to your old behavior.
We have all done this time and time again in our lives. We committed to practicing our instruments every day. We did this for a while, but then went back to laziness. We dieted and lost weight, but eventually went back to our old habits and gained the weight back. We struggled with addictions to cigarettes, alcohol, and other chemicals. For a while, we got rid of this habit, but then we returned to our old behavior. In short, we tried to improve ourselves in some way, but we failed to create lasting change.
We will keep trying and failing until something forces us to change our beliefs. When we change the programs our brains run, we create permanent changes. Most of us have had life-changing experiences. An experience that changes what we’ve struggled with for months in an instant. At that moment, one of our beliefs changed dramatically. We knew we were supposed to be wearing our seat belts, but we couldn’t remember to do them. Then something happened. We got a ticket or our friend got into a car accident. Suddenly, we believe that not using a seat belt causes pain. We knew we had to quit smoking, but we couldn’t. Then a close friend was told he had lung cancer or a stroke. Suddenly we associate pain with smoking. We had a bad relationship, but we just couldn’t seem to break up. We thought it would be better in the future. Then something happened. Suddenly we see the pain in the past, the pain in the present, the pain we always have. That’s when our beliefs changed. As soon as our beliefs change, the battle is over.
Real lasting change is never a matter of ability. It’s always a matter of motivation. Connect enough pain with the old belief, and connect it with the new belief that you want enough pleasure, and eternal change will happen in an instant.
We have to decide. We can sit back and wait for life to strike us with some unfortunate event that changes our beliefs. Or we can take a hard look at our own beliefs. Most of our beliefs are not carefully thought out and chosen. We get them by accident by accidentally loading viruses on our computers. Our beliefs can empower us or disempower us by creating artificial limitations.
If we believe in ourselves and our dreams, we will go to great lengths to make those dreams come true. We set clear goals and develop ways to achieve them. We will be looking for ways to meet other music people and build personal networks. Every day we look around and ask, “What can I do today to get closer to those goals and aspirations?”
If we believe that our lives are created by the thoughts we think, the words we speak, and the actions we take, we will live a rich and fulfilling life. If we believe that success only comes to the lucky few, we will live a life full of bitterness, despair, and failure.
The choice is ours. Our Creator empowered us with willpower. The Good Book says, “He that hath no vision shall perish.”
We can choose to be visionary. What is needed is a dream and persistence to achieve it.
