How to Set Up a Beginners Home Studio For $5 and Still Record Good Quality Audio

I’m always seeing guides for home recording hopefuls that aim to provide guidance on the best equipment and software needed to start a home recording studio. One thing these “how-to” articles have in common is that they are excellent explanations of how to set up an intermediate home studio, not a beginner.

I remember how excited I was when I first started writing my own stuff, mostly music, then audiobooks, voiceovers, podcasts, videos, etc. It was about 20 years ago, and honestly, it’s out there. Audio recording frame topics confuse me! I’m an engineer and producer! So I’ve come up with a basic “audio recording tutorial for beginners”. If this tutorial includes the abbreviation “MIDI” (or any acronym for that matter), it’s not. For starters.” Why?

First, let’s look at why someone would want to start recording audio from home. What do you think? Not everyone is a musician! In this multimedia, Internet-dependent, YouTube-watching age, audio is ubiquitous; Well, at least bad to mediocre sound is everywhere ;). From podcasts to audiobooks, voiceovers, e-learning, video articles, and yes, music, we consume audio almost every minute of every day. So it’s a mistake to assume that all people who really want good beginner’s advice on setting up and running their own home recording studio, or even most, are musicians. These people don’t need to be told anything about the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) protocol.

Second, let’s talk about musicians with little recording experience. Most of these people are singers, guitarists, garage rock bands or folk songwriters. In other words, they just want to put their music “out there” in the world as a recording. Musicians tend to be artists… Artists aren’t always great at hard sciences like electrical engineering or computer science. Even among recording beginners, MIDI is not something they immediately need.

I made a video explaining what advice I give to beginners, so I thought you’d like to know what that looks like. Well, here it is. Free audio recording software download. There are a few good programs that are open source “freeware” like Audacity for example. Total cost so far: $0.00. Then get yourself a pair of headphones or earphones. If anyone in your house has an mp3 player, you probably have at least one set. Total cost so far: $0.00. Now all you need is a microphone. Your basic home studio needs only a computer microphone. Thanks to online role-playing games and the Internet, most people will have at least one of these. Total cost so far: $0.00. If you don’t have a computer microphone, you can get one almost anywhere for $5.00. So by far the most expensive entry-level home recording studio is $5.00. Once you have these items, you have your own studio!

Now, in the title of this post, I promised to explain how to record good quality audio from a $5.00 studio. So what should I say for myself? Just this: when it comes to audio quality, knowledge trumps equipment. If you understand a few basic principles of audio recording, you can produce better quality sound from your $5.00 studio than someone with a $500 studio who has no idea what they’re doing! I have seen/heard this many times.

Oh, you think you want me to reveal a few of these key principles, don’t you? Well, if you insist. First, and most importantly, record as little noise as possible. Second, be able to reduce and/or eliminate noise that cannot be prevented. There will always be some, especially the $5.00 studio. In other words, write as much as possible of what you want people to hear and less of what you don’t want to hear.

You can learn more about these basics in the tutorial on the Home Brew Audio website. The video tutorials there will take you as a beginner…a REAL beginner and show you how to set up a studio and make your first recording for $5.00 in the first 5 lessons (takes less than an hour). By the way, it’s FREE ;). Come and try it. I promise the first few videos didn’t mention “MIDI” at all.
