Five Common English Mistakes Made by Japanese Speakers

I have worked as an English teacher in Japan for many years and have taught hundreds of students during that time. After a while, I noticed that different students made the same kind of mistakes, and I started hearing the same mistakes repeated in different classes. So I thought it would be a good idea to mention some common English mistakes among Japanese students. Of course, this may apply to students from other countries, but Japanese students should find these tips especially helpful. So here are five sentences that each contain common mistakes. Why not see if you can fix the error yourself before reading the comments?

1. I have been to Scotland
2. Swimming is very interesting
3. Renting a car for a day costs £25
4. I like music
5. My son bought candy with his own money

Can you see the error? If not, here are the explanations.

1. I have been to Scotland

Mistake: We don’t use the word “never” that way. We usually use it as follows.

a. ‘Have you ever had sushi?’
b. After “if”, for example, “If you go to Rome, you should go to the Vatican.”
c. Like, “Natto is the weirdest food I’ve ever eaten.”

Correct version: I was in Scotland
Note: You may be confused because you are trying to use the word “never” as the same as “never”. The sentence “I have never been to Scotland” is grammatically correct.

2. Swimming is very interesting

Mistake: We use the word “interesting” to describe things that are mentally pleasurable or challenging, not things that give us physical or simple pleasure. Therefore, it is correct to say, “I read an interesting book” or “My friend has an interesting job.” For sports, activities, recreation, etc., we use ‘fun’ or ‘fun’.

Correct option: Swimming is very fun/very enjoyable
Note: You may be confused by the translation of the Japanese word “omoshiroi”, which can have two meanings in Japanese.

***

3. Renting a car for a day costs £25

Mistake: “Loan” means that someone lends us something temporarily, as a favor, and we don’t have to pay it back. For example, “I borrowed my brother’s pen.” If we pay for the temporary use of something, we use “rent” or “hire”.

Correct version: Car hire/hire costs £25 for the day

***

4. I like music

Error: “Music” is an uncountable noun. We do not use ‘the’ with the uncountable noun when it has a general meaning, as in this case.

Correct version: I like music
Note: You can use “the” if you’re being more specific, eg “I like the music you’re playing”

***

5. I took a nice photo with the new camera

Mistake: We use ‘with’ to describe a physical thing (such as an object or a tool) that we use to do something.

Correct version: I took a nice picture with my new camera
Note: You can use ‘by’ as the ‘ing’ form of the verb, eg I climbed a tree and took a great photo of a bird.

***
How did you do it? Well done if you found the bug! If not, don’t worry because these are common mistakes that are hard to spot. In fact, it happens so often that many Japanese learners think they are expressing English correctly. So when learning English, always question what you hear and don’t assume that the language other students use is correct, even if it sounds correct. I hope you found these examples interesting and helpful. Check out more in future posts.
