The Silvertone 1300 – A Classic Amp From the 40’s

The Silvertone 1300 guitar amplifier was introduced in the spring and summer of 1947 and was produced until 1950. It was a Sears and Roebuck guitar amp listed in their catalog as 57L01300 for $60-$70. It was a simple amp with 3 inputs, 8 inch speakers and 12-14 watts peak output through a 5-tube power unit. It was nicely housed in a small but solid wooden cabinet with a cloth painted front speaker and a leather handle on top. The three inputs are controlled by two separate volume knobs (two inputs connected to one volume knob) and a master volume switch for all three inputs that acts as an amp on/off switch.

The Silvertone 1300 was used by many artists during the 1950s and can be credited with creating many of the signature, unique sounds and sounds that emerged during this era. Most notably, Luther Perkins used the Silvertone 1300 during the recording of several Johnny Cash classics, including “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Cry, Cry, Cry,” and “Hey Porter.” As a result of this early use, the Silvertone 1300 amplifier now has real estate in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, where it is proudly displayed.

I was lucky enough to acquire a Silvertone a few years ago, and as a proud owner I can say with authority that the sound of this little wonder is amazing. The simplicity of the amp allows you to experience the raw quality and tone of a true vintage tube amp that is not available on modern amps. The tone is clean and stable up to 8 watts of power, after which you can overdrive the tubes for a rich, delicious rumble that’s the vintage sound you’d expect from an amp like this. It is almost indescribable. I play my Silvertone all the time, but at the moment I know very well that I have limited time with it. Everything on it (even the vocals) is fortunately original, but unfortunately, vocals don’t last forever. These precious amplifiers from the 40s, 50s and early 60s will slowly disappear forever, falling victim to the rigors of time and reality. Of course, tubes and transformers can be replaced, but modern replacements are not the same, and they do not have the same tone as the tubes, transformers and speakers produced during the birth of Rock and Roll.

If you like to collect vintage instruments, you may one day collect the Silvertone 1300. They are hard to find, but if you are patient and persistent, you will eventually find them. They’re out there, but you’ll have to look.
