Spanish Guitar Songs, Chords and Scales

When you pick up an acoustic guitar, you want to play songs, right? Maybe sing some songs by the fire. Many pop songs and folk songs sound great with an acoustic guitar, but there’s often a sudden urge to play a Spanish guitar song. If you can play a Spanish guitar song or a Spanish-sounding instrument, it’s a sign of your progress as a guitar player. It’s a desire that many guitarists have, but not many people know about, when it comes to finding the right music to play Spanish-flavored music.

To help these guitarists who want to play guitar seriously, I’ll give you some tips. I know that many of the songs we’ve identified as Spanish guitar songs are technically quite advanced, but I wouldn’t leave any of them off the list based on technical difficulty. Any guitar part you’ve ever heard is probably on tab, and once you’ve tried playing it on tab, you’ll decide for yourself if you’re trying to play something that’s too difficult for you.

When you think of Spanish music, what artists come to mind? There are the Kings of the Gypsies, Rodrigo Y Gabriela and Paco De Lucia. What about Jose Feliciano? He played Spanish guitar-style arrangements of several Beatles songs.

Or there’s Spain’s Caravan by The Doors. It was actually a mixture of a flamenco guitar model called the Granadina and a classical guitar model called the Asturias by Isaac Albéniz. Playing guitar sounds great on record, but it’s not a huge technical challenge. You can get the general flavor of the Spanish Caravan intro by playing B, C, and D bar chords on the second, third, and fifth frets. They are all the same chord shape and are based on a major chord shape in first position. Here’s the B bar chord on tab:

e–2——————–|

B–4——————-|

G–4——————-|

D–4——————-|

A–2——————-|

E———————————|

Now to add some flamenco flavor to these chords, take the fretboard and place your first finger on the fifth string and open the first string three positions.

So now your B chord is:

e–0——————–|

B–4——————-|

G–4——————-|

D–4——————-|

A–2——————-|

E———————————|

You can also try the same technique by removing the bar from F major and moving it around the keyboard to see how it sounds.

Some popular Spanish songs you can Google: Compostelana, La Tarara, Volver, Bomboleiro, Bomoleira, Adelita and La Morena de mi Copla. These are all popular songs, and finding chords, lyrics, and tabs on the web shouldn’t be too difficult.
