Dubstep Music – A New Genre of Electronic Music Emerges As a UK Trend to Become a Global Phenomenon

Dubstep music is one of the first music genres to emerge in the 21st century, developing at the turn of the new millennium. It was influenced by the Grime and 2-Step scenes popular in the UK in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and incorporated elements of breakbeat and drum and bass music. The term ‘Dubstep’ was first coined in 2002, and by then it had fully developed into its own music genre and gained mainstream recognition.

Dubstep is primarily instrumental, although vocal samples are not uncommon. The rhythmic loops and drum tracks used in dubstep give the impression of being slowed down, as if played at half the speed of the other elements of the song. The bassline tends to be the centerpiece of any Dubstep track, with special emphasis on processing and mixing sub-bass frequencies (below 100Hz). As a general rule, the tempo usually ranges from 130 to 150 BPM.

The Forward>> club in London is the first to host regular Dubstep events. BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was one of the first recognizable figures in the music industry to acknowledge the early days of Dubstep, playing Dubstep on his radio from 2003 until his death in 2004. Other influential DJs and producers participated. The genre at the time included Skream, Benga and Plastician to name a few. By 2005, Dubstep had gone from a local UK scene to a global movement, with Dubstep events taking place in the US, Japan and elsewhere.

Dubstep’s biggest names at the moment include Scream, Benga, Rusco and Boxkutter, all based in the UK. Influential Dubstep record labels include Planet Mu, Dub Police, Z Audio, Hotflush Recordings, and Tectonic.
