If It’s Doubtful – Then Assume It’s Dirty!

I call my parents ‘practicing Christians’. That means they actually try to live by the rules of conduct laid down for us in the Bible. They actually do treat others the way they want to be treated. They actually do love others as Christ loved others. They are without guile – that means – they are exactly the people they seem to be when you first meet them. They are Christians, and you can trust them entirely. They are really refreshing people in this increasingly dark and dismal world. They are Christians who have discernment – and a great capacity to distinguish between acceptable Christian behavior – and behavior that stems from an evil source and is not even remotely acceptable to God. The devil finds them increasingly hard to fool!

How did they become the people they are today? Were they just born that way? They did come from very honest and straightforward families. They were brought up to have a very strong belief in just telling the truth and dealing with the consequences. The consequences of telling the truth will always be less than lying first – and eventually telling the truth.

But when they got saved mom and dad understood that there was at least one new requirement in their lives. They were still required to tell the truth, to treat others the way they wanted to be treated, to love others, and there was one more thing of GREAT IMPORTANCE – they were required to ‘study God’s word’. Through the continual study of God’s precepts – they would be able to avoid many of the deceptions and pitfalls of the world around them. And – they would be able to teach and guide their own children through the deceptive world in which we live.

The end result was certainly not perfect – but they personally became very discerning people. Together they raised six children to love God and keep the commandments. Growing up we did not specifically study each and every cult or false doctrine. We just had the straight scripture and sound Bible teachings ‘crammed down our throats’ every time mom or dad got the chance. We were all ‘churched regular’ – which means we went to church consistently in addition to being taught sound Bible doctrine and theology at home.

We had the blessings of attending some very solid churches. That blessing is still available today to believers who are willing to hear sound teachings. Many people refuse to hear such teachings and attend a liberal church with a gospel so watered down it no longer resembles the church which proudly proclaimed the ‘Old Time Religion’ to be the foundation on which they stood.

We had the blessings of a solid home. Now – there were six kids in the house – and that really prevents a house that is continually serene, peaceful, and clean. Mom was a bit ‘frazzled’ some of the time. What I am getting at is while we did grow up in a good home – even that wasn’t perfect. However, it was really consistent in two things. Mom and dad loved us all; and we were all held to a standard of behavior that was acceptable to God. That included actually remembering and applying the things we learned in church to our lives. Even as small children – we were able to change some bad behavior and set a course for behavior as adults that would be acceptable Christian behavior.

Mom and dad did err on the side of caution many times. Their theory was ‘If its doubtful – its dirty’. That meant if they weren’t certain it was OK for us to participate in something, then they considered it ‘dirty’. We were not allowed to participate, and that was the end of the discussion. There were things their children could have been allowed to do that really were not harmful, and in some cases even good. But they felt it was better to wait and see on something with which they were not familiar. One of their basic tenants of my parents was, “If everybody else is doing it – my kids are NOT going to do it”. And their tactics raised six children to adulthood who had a very solid knowledge of what the Bible said about how we were supposed to live. Sadly, that sort of upbringing is largely lacking in our society today. Children raised by parents who were to busy to take the time to learn what the Bible has to say about something became parents who have no idea of why the Bible teachings are even relevant in today’s modern society. And that opens the door for all kinds of error and compromise in the church.

Are you someone who didn’t have the Christian upbringing you now wish you had had? There is good news for you. Where you are today may be a product of your upbringing and/or liberal theology taught in a liberal church. But where you are tomorrow is YOUR CHOICE!!! You don’t have to stay Bible ignorant. You don’t have to stay in a liberal church which presents a watered down gospel – denying the power of Jesus Christ. You don’t have to accept a ‘social gospel’ as all Jesus has to offer. Neither are you condemned to continue in behavior that is unacceptable to God. You don’t have to swallow the ‘everybody’s doing it’ idea of how to decide if something is acceptable to God or not!

Forming a solid foundation of practices acceptable to God does require Bible study. Now is a good time for all Christians to look at the practices in their lives and decide if they are within the bounds of what is acceptable Christian behavior, or if something must be discontinued as behavior outside the realm of proper Christian behavior.

A very important truth that Christians need to accept is that there are only two sources of supernatural power.

One is the Mighty God of the Bible.

And the second source is the fallen angel Lucifer (Satan) and his followers. Lucifer does not have the power of the God of creation. He can only win souls by trickery, lies, and deceit. He isn’t going to approach people with ‘Hello – I’m the devil – come to hell.” A saved person is not going to lose salvation – but peace and joy can be exchanged for misery and woe. And Christians lose their children and entire family all the time to various tricks of the devil. He approaches people through many avenues such as:

Music – the heavy beat of rock music is the same beat used in occultist rituals such as voodoo. You cannot take something with evil roots and clean it up enough to be acceptable to God. This is not even doubtful – it is definitely dirty!

Lyrics – the lyrics of rock music are unprintable – they encourage and glorify behavior that breaks ALL the commandments. Most Christians who have actually listened to the lyrics of most rock music will admit that the lyrics are utterly wicked. But many of the same people will keep the music but change the lyrics to something that sounds more Christian. How naive or willingly ignorant can they be? ALL rock music begins with an unholy sound pattern that is not pleasant to God’s ears. No lyrics are ‘good enough’ to overcome an evil beginning that seeks to make a connection with God’s adversary the devil! This is definitely dirty as well.

Entertainment – movies like the Harry Potter series are obviously occult in nature. The occult is very real and very dangerous. Viewers of all ages can be drawn into actual occult practices through such seemingly harmless entertainment. Many if not most of the movies and television shows portray as normal things that are forbidden by the Bible. Be careful what you watch.

Fantasy Card Gaming – do you see anything Christian in the collection of cards like Pokemon (pocket demons) or Yu-Gi-Ho? They use magik to fight foes. The idea that such power can be summoned by rituals and incantations is contrary to the Bible teachings of God. Believers are taught to approach God with reverence and awe. There is no Bible teaching that says we can summon God at will – or demand that He act in a certain way at a certain time.

Mind Games and Practices – these include

Yoga in all its forms – which is a Hindu practice

Reiki has something to do with ‘life force’

Labyrinth – something to do with a circling path or road that keeps getting smaller and smaller until the center is reached.

Ouija board – answers questions by spelling out words – I believe actual demons control the game piece.

Dungeons and Dragons – an older interactive fantasy game that uses role playing and spells.

I believe it is doubtful that any of these games or rituals would be acceptable practices to God.

Social programs – the idea of ‘taking from the rich to give to the poor’ IS NOT BIBLICAL! It is Biblical to care for family and have regard for the poor. But that is the duty of the individual Christian and the Church. It is not the duty of the government. You see the result of such behavior. People rely on the government instead of God. That is a terrible trade. Our God owns the cattle on a thousand hills. The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness there of. His resources are unlimited. The government only has what it can take in taxes. And they only give churlishly. There is no generosity in any government – just a desire for more power.

Social Gospel – there is a terrible trend in churches to set aside the power of God and replace it with the disastrous ideology that the church is here to bring about social change and reform. They are completely forgetting that a heart truly changed by God will naturally reform wicked behavior for behavior that is pleasing to God. These liberal churches are getting the cart before the horse – and they are working much harder than is necessary for very small results. When Christians actually begin to practice what the Bible teaches – the world will be changed for the better. All a social gospel does is change the outward appearance of the world – it does nothing for the heart of the matter – but such worship does make Satan happy.

Blended Religion – which takes things like Hinduism, humanism, Wicca and spiritism inside the church. Anything outside what God has sanctioned as acceptable worship is NOT acceptable. You cannot add or subtract anything from the gospel.

With all the Christians engaging in the type of things I just mentioned I really wonder – ‘Is anyone out there taking holiness to the Lord seriously? Does anyone even have a clue as to what that means?’

Christians are supposed to WANT to please God because they love Him. He gave us life on earth and eternal life in heaven. His favor is worth more than anything this world can offer. Ask Moses. He gave up the wealth of Egypt to follow the God of his fathers. The rules God has given us to live by are not arbitrarily chosen. They are for our good. God’s rules are to keep us from harm. Obedience to God and the rules He sets for us will bring us good – not evil. To engage in any practice that is doubtful as to its origin is silly – and dangerous!

I cannot possible list all the ways the devil can sidetrack Christians into disobeying God. He is the master deceiver. It is the duty of every believer to become wise enough to discern good from evil.

Here is good test in every case. Look in the Bible for any shred of evidence that something in which you or your children are interested has ever been practiced or condoned. You will not find things like witchcraft, spiritism, chanting in place of prayer, reciting mantras, calling on any power but God, fortune telling, idol worship, ritual worship, ritual dancing, or man centered practices to be acceptable to God. These things will not enhance your perception of the God of the Bible, nor draw you closer to Him, nor change one life for the better, nor bring about one positive change in the world. They are all paths that lead to destruction. Do not allow yourself to fall into such folly in the name of open mindedness, getting along, boredom, peer pressure, or any other excuse for falling into sin! When you stand before God on judgment day you will not regret having rejected things of this world in favor of a closer walk with God.

The song for this article is ‘Just a Closer Walk With Thee’. The closer you walk with the Lord – the greater your joy now and in heaven – and the less the likely hood you will be deceived by something evil masquerading as something good.

Thanks for reading my article. God bless you.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee

I am weak, but Thou art strong;

Jesus, keep me from all wrong;

I’ll be satisfied as long

As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,

Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,

Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,

If I falter, Lord, who cares?

Who with me my burden shares?

None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

When my feeble life is o’er,

Time for me will be no more;

Guide me gently, safely o’er

To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.
