Playing Bass Guitar By Ear

I started playing music at a young age. I grew up in a place where you could hear steel pan music, or if you walked a short distance from our house you would go into the steel pan band room or the steel band shed as they called it.

All I remember is taking the lid of a galvanized dustbin and holding it between two legs like a steel pan, playing with one stick and hearing it come out knocking on the dustbin. There were interesting tunes at that time, I couldn’t explain the experience at that time, but I felt some kind of connection with the music. I don’t think other people heard what I heard, but what I heard sounded so good it made me realize that something greater than myself was going on inside of me. Looking back now, I’m sure it was my inspiration and premonition of what I was going to do with my life.

Sometimes the band members would call me to the band room to play songs with me, they thought I had a good ear for music and I was very quick to listen to music, and I liked it a lot. I also remember playing with a friend who played acoustic guitar, and he also played an acoustic guitar, but it only had four strings. I think I was training at the time but didn’t know it.

Even in elementary school, I had the opportunity to play in the school’s brass band.

By then my ears had improved. All this time I lived in Trinidad. We then moved to live in Trinidad’s sister island, Tobago. There, my cousin and uncle took me to a combo, a fledgling band, and my uncle and cousin told their band leader that I was interested in playing bass, and I never remembered telling them, but they were willing to give me a lead. experiment for me.

There were other bass players in that band at the time, but we were all learning, but I had a bass guitar with all the notes written on it, and it was like they knew I was coming, so I made it my own. is responsible for using this opportunity. Well, this intrigued me.

What happened next was an experience I will never forget. After school, he would run to the band room to practice alone to learn about the bass guitar, and after about three weeks, he took off the sheet of paper with the note names on the drive board. I think my desire and effort It made me the more used bass player than the other two bass players in that band.

When I actually started playing; My initiative, or rather the band leader, who was going to learn a song with the band, asked me to put a bass around my neck and call out my stuck notes while I played the song. fret-board, and I would play them, even Like all bass players, I couldn’t get my fingers right, (this needs to be fixed when you start playing bass by ear: you can get help from some social media sites), I could see, hear and play notes.

After time, experience, and the chance to play with other bands that I liked, I got better. When I was in Tobago, musicians who heard me play would come from Trinidad and ask me to play with them. I learned a lot from them. In all that time playing with those groups, I never read a sheet music or a note from a bass guitar tab; I really didn’t know that at the time. I played a lot of music just by listening and transferred what I heard to the bass.

I remember a famous nightclub where I was a member of the resident band. Sometimes I would play the songs I heard for about a minute and then accompany the singers to play the whole song after a few minutes. In fact, they only came to us to give us an example of what to expect. I also enjoyed this experience, I think it helped train my hearing.

The bottom line is that playing music by ear is challenging, but it’s not impossible to be a good bass player who plays by ear. My only advice is that even if you like to play by ear, learn to read sheet music and bass guitar tabs, it will help you learn note values, scales, arpeggios… Just listen. play all kinds of music, so you can be a player in every way; not limited to one musical style.

I just thought I should encourage beginners who want to play bass guitar by ear.

Have fun!
